now, in 2007, i was at a conference. i'll be honest. it was a little boring and i thought one of the bar men was walking around and serving drinks. it wasn't. it was this man here wearing a black shirt and white suit and he came over. two hours later i finished talking with this young man and i'm not that smart a guy but i'm smart enough to realize he's part of a young generation who are going to change this planet and that generation is represented here tonight. and when the prime minister said the most important thing is for thought to become action, i looked out and i thought, here is a concert where you cannot buy a ticket. you have to take your thought of doing something better for the planet. you have to put it into action and that is why you are here and that is why we are here. so thank you all. >> give it up, guys!

here in new york where they are going to be announcing goals to see an end to extreme poverty by 2030, we need to make sure that all of the leaders agree. all right? and that's where your voices going to come in very, very, very handy. because those goals are going to be ambitious and speak to the real needs of the citizens. we're going to need your voice. are you going to help me on that? so we have asked two of the world's greatest rock stars to actually take time out of their very, very busy schedules to make their very own commitment. ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the president of the world bank group jim kim. >> hello, new york! it is my job to end poverty by 2030. the world bank group is the group that follows the poverty

numbers. in 1990, 36% of all the people in the world lived in extreme poverty. tonight, i'm thrilled to tell that by next year, that number will drop to below 12%. for the first time in human kind, we can be the generation that ends extreme poverty. now, what happens if we don't lift people out of poverty, if we don't build health care systems, you have problems like ebola. and if you don't provide education and training and jobs, young people get so frustrated that they pick up weapons and bombs instead of being global citizens. i commit tonight to spend every year at least $65 billion to end
