My dad took me to see Close Encounters of The Third Kind; and we were both surprised how much I liked it as a 10 year-old. After all, my dad did warn me ‘…this is not an alien invasion movie like War of The Worlds…’ which most kids my age had seen on Saturday afternoon tv and had considered it a well done, science fiction thriller (in color!) with cool enough models and end of the world, ‘animated’ lasers effects.
I’d been excited to see other famed, 1950’s sci-fi movies The Day The Earth Stood Still and, particularly, Forbidden Planet. I had loved and been appropriately scared by Spielberg’s Jaws so I eagerly awaited to see the action of Spielberg’s next blockbuster.
Like I already said: I was not disappointed.

I find it difficult to pick a favorite Spielberg movie especially after Schindler’s List and then Saving Private Ryan became part of his cinematic, not just an action adventure, summer blockbuster film resume’.
I still like Close Encounters more than Spielberg’s E.T.

So, I wanted to see Close Encounters the way I had seen it in the theatre in 1977. No Richard Dreyfus inside the alien ship. This is it. The 137 minute version listed here as the Collector’s Edition (DVD) 2002 Columbia Pictures. Widescreen.
If I have a complaint I thought Digitally Mastered would mean a little cleaner and easier to see some night time special effects.
I, also, do have a more difficult time watching dad Dreyfus throwing bricks through the kitchen window of his own home in preparation for his obsessive sculpture creation… the sculptor’s work—that started in a handful of shaving cream and then a plate full of mash potatoes—just keeps getting bigger and bigger; and not very funny for the kids to see their dad becoming thoroughly unstable specifically in the eyes of their mother (Teri Garr).
Does Dreyfus really have to jump on the hood of the car? And thrown to the pavement?

Favorite lines from Close Encounters:
Francois Truffaut as the very affable French Scientist: ‘They were invited.’ As well as: ‘are you an artist?’
Dreyfuss answer: ‘No, but I have one of those (Devils Towers sculptures) in my living room.’
‘Who are you people? Why do I know so much?’
And Daffy Duck (via Saturday morning cartoons) cursing at Marvin The Martian: ‘That’s the last straw!’
Indeed it is for the obsessed Dreyfuss, too.

I have not seen this movie for years. I did get to see it at the show up on the big screen. Steven Spielberg is a master film maker and really knows how to make entertaining epic adventure stories come to life on the big screen. He also makes some pretty interesting sci-fi movies. Close Encounters is one of his best and he broke new ground in sfx with this one. His real genius is making his characters believable. Having read some of the negative reviews on the 4K release of this fine film I was a little apprehensive but I ordered it anyway to get my own take on the 4K version and I must say I had none of the issues that others were saying they were having. Some were complaining that the 4K version was too dark in places and too bright in others. I have a SAMSUNG 55" tv that I purchased back in late 2019. It wasn't until recently that I learned how to play with the controls to get the best picture. There are some things that I changed or got rid of completely that are just unnecessary. For instance, the sharpness needs to be set all the way to neutral as adding sharpness can cause blurriness to the image. I know that sounds counter intuitive but believe me that's how it works. I also changed the brightness controls down to -2 and the backlight to 35 on the "movie" setting and depending on the ambient light in the room I set the contrast enhancer to "off" for night time viewing and "low" for daytime. All these settings help to keep the washed out brightness and the darkness under control while maintaining the HDR resolution. I must say having seen the movie several times over the years from VHS to DVD and Blu-ray and now on 4K blu-ray it has never looked better. The details of the mother ship at the end are sharp and clear and the colors just pop off the screen. This disc has three versions. The original theater version, then the enhanced version where Roy goes inside the huge mother ship, and the directors version. All on one disc. The price is also a very good deal. I will probably be ordering E.T. in the very near future after seeing the excellent restoration of this classic from COLUMBIA and Steven Spielberg who I know is very proud of his work and the restoration of these film masterpieces.

Columbia Pictures/Sony released on both UHD and Blu-ray this immensely popular and influential science fiction film from 1977 written and directed by Steven Spielberg that stars Richard Dreyfuss as an ordinary family man who has his life irrevocably turned upside down after encountering a UFO in his town one night, which his bewildered wife (played by Teri Garr) cannot deal with, forcing her to take their children away and freeing him to pursue the confusing clues to Devil's Tower in Wyoming, where others like him have gathered but having to tangle with the military and scientists also determined to control and explore the impending third encounter with the large UFO..

This 2017 40th anniversary edition is a fine upgrade from the previous editions on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray, porting over those extras, and looks better than ever. 3-disc set includes the Blu-ray, where the three versions of the film are available to watch as before, the second Blu-ray disc has all the special features, and the third is the UHD which I am currently unable to view but will update when that changes. A must have for innumerable reasons!

Issued in 1977 (44 years ago!), this movie shows some signs of age. For instance, the computer room at the landing site, designed no doubt to impress spectators, is just laughable today. Still, the special effects are impressive and the storyline, deliberately centred around “ordinary folks” including a small child, probably works just as well as it did initially.

Overall, given the subject matter is ageless, it seems definitely justifiable to introduce this work to today’s younger generations.

I've always enjoyed this movie just as pure entertainment, and so I wanted to own a copy, but I have to say that I was so disappointed in the "Special Edition" because I was unaware that my favorite scene is deleted from this version. The very end, when Roy is taken into the spaceship, and the experience he has inside the spaceship, is NOT THERE!! Huge disappointment!!! Such a crucial scene to be deleted.
