Welcome is a 2009 French drama film directed by Philippe Lioret and starring Vincent Lindon. The film follows the story of a young Kurdish refugee, Bilal, as he tries to cross the English Channel in order to reunite with his girlfriend Mina in London. The film follows Bilal's journey and his encounters with the people of the small coastal town of Calais, France, where he is attempting to cross. He meets a swimming instructor, Simon, who helps him and other refugees in their attempt to make the risky journey. As Simon and Bilal become friends, Simon also discovers a secret between Bilal and Mina. Despite many obstacles, Bilal eventually succeeds in crossing the Channel, but not before being faced with an agonizing dilemma. The film explores themes of immigration, social justice, and the human cost of global migration.
