Many years ago, I began to study Spanish and have been using a book called Spanish Reading and Comprehension. The book has 25 chapters, each of them dealing with a different author or issue. The present one, Chapter 22, deals with the terrible conditions in the mines of Chile around 100 years ago. Those conditions were written about by a Chilean writer named Baldomero Lillo. He wrote a book called Sub Terra, same as the movie, which translated means under the earth. At the end of the chapter, there was information about sources for further study and this movie was mentioned. It's a social issue type of movie and would be interesting mostly for those who are interested in the conditions in the mines of Chile a long time ago.

THe book is terrific but the movie feels like a not well done telenovela, every scene is about a dramatic cry. Feels like a movie for little kids. THe story is in itself a lesson but the movie is not. Good photography but as a movie it looks like a the pieces of a one year telenovela cut in pieces. THere are better Chilean movies, this is not one of them.

This movie is a masterpiece of the Chilean cinema, recommendable not only for the deeply impressing performances of the actors but also for an excellent script and direction !
