I'm glad I'm seeing Tom Felton on other films, I just wish it wasn't this kind of films.
Dominic Cooper makes for a decent lead, but Stratton makes for a painfully mediocre action-thriller from director Simon West, with dreadful pacing, perfunctory set pieces, and a pedestrian script that offers little surprises.
Not horrible, but not recommended. I was on the fence about seeing this, but it happened to work perfectly with my schedule.
The main reason I saw this movie was because Connie Nielsen was in it. I thought she was great, but unfortunately, she needs better roles.
The story is all over the place and not intriguing or that great. It gets a little better toward the end, but I wish I could say it made better sense.
This is the 115th film I saw using Movie Pass.
In this movie we meet A British Sbs John Stratton played by Dominic Cooper who loses a fellow soldier in combat. Then he comes upon the realization that an old operative has resurfaced and he has to stop him. The performances are good along with the directing. I do reccomend that you watch it!!
Obviously Simon West is never going to match his Con Air heyday (let's face it, who would?).
But I think he's proved on enough occasions that he's still a perfectly competent action director, and does so again with Stratton. There are only two things that really work against this film and stop it from being a bit more enjoyable - even though it was never, ever going to be a classic to begin with.
Firstly, it's not silly enough. There are very few laughs to be had here and any that there are come courtesy of.... wait for it! DEREK JACOBI. Yeah, Derek Jacobi in what will probably be a straight-to-DVD action film directed by Simon West, drunkenly slurring dirty…
When you take a good look at the director it won’t surprise you that this movie is horrible. Simon west the guy who directed god awful garbage like Wild Card, the first Tomb Raider movie and oddly enough the remake of When a Stranger Calls. Also fun fact this movie has a 0% on rotten tomatoes and for the most part I can see why, first off the editing in this movie feels sloppy. It’s almost as if actual humans did not edit this at all, the movie was so oddly paced as well like there were a few scenes where it felt way too fast and give little time for the audience to know what the hell is going…
The poster makes it look like a badass throwback action flick. In reality it feels more like a procedural TV pilot (with some blood thrown in) than a feature film. Some decent action and practical stuntwork towards the end but nothing really that hasn't been done better numerous times before.
Neuer Tiefpunkt, zumindest für mich, was Simon West Filme angeht.
Perfectly serviceable action piece, everything is thoroughly professional, but very anonymous and not very memorable. Jason Stratham seems older and can pull off goofy charisma even in straight up bad movies. Cooper certainly can fill the action star role, but comes off as a bit generic in material like this. This is a problem because he is by far the most interesting character here. Both of his American sidekicks are completely anonymous. Gemma Chan does all right, but her character doesn't have much to do. Connie Nielsen is sleepwalking through a pantomime version of Judi Dench as M. I was confused what Tom Felton was doing, but eventually there was a utilitarian plot reason for his existence here.
Obviously everyone…
