Jamie Carragher shuts down Micah Richards' Liverpool & Borussia Dortmund Champions League claim

One thing that will disappoint Liverpool fans about Jurgen Klopp’s exit this summer is that they won’t have one final Champions League night under his stewardship.

On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund provided the pure elation that only those magical nights can conjure up when they beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate to secure their semi-final birth.

One of the main reasons why the German club reached the last four of the Champions League for the first time in 11 years was because of their home fans at the Signal Iduna Park and how the famous Yellow Wall drove them to an incredible victory.

Liverpool fans inside Anfield will know exactly how that feels like because they have a history of creating these special moments time and time again in the Champions League.

From that incredible Steven Gerrard goal against Olympiacos to that quite stunning comeback against Barcelona.

Whilst Reds won’t get to see that under Klopp again ahead of his exit, you know that those scripts are written for the future and will be played out by the next manager.

Jamie Carragher lauded the ‘massive’ advantage Dortmund fans provide their team, especially because of their home atmosphere and he compared it to Liverpool’s.

But when it was suggested to him by Micah Richards that Dortmund’s might just be better, he wasn’t having any of it, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (16/04/24 at 7:20 pm).

Yes, the 2005 European Cup winner was complimentary of Dortmund, but there is one club who wins that contest in his eyes.

Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund on Champions League nights

“It’s massive,” said Carragher about Dortmund’s home advantage. “I know that myself from that flip-side when I was playing for Liverpool at Anfield. You think it gives you a great opportunity.

“I was going to say that to Micah (Richards) when he was going through the team of Borussia Dortmund. You talk about Sancho, the other attacking players, Brandt is in there, but the biggest advantage will be that. The Yellow Wall, the energy and atmosphere in that stadium. That is one of the greatest sights in European football.”

Richards then asked: “One of the best atmospheres. As good as Liverpool at Anfield, would you say, Jamie?”

Carragher responded: “Behave yourself! It’s not far away.”

Liverpool in the Europa League

The team will be away from home on Thursday night, as they bid to overcome a 3-0 deficit against Atalanta.

There will be no advantage of having the home crowd behind you here, as the players need to perform a miracle away from home.

Everyone knows that it’s in Liverpool’s DNA to win these types of games, so can there be one final miracle before Klopp bows out?!

Amid the attacking players missing chance after chance after chance, it just wouldn’t be a surprise if they completely blew Atalanta away here and scored the required goals to progress.
