Sir Stephen de Longespée was the son of William Longespée, and Ela, Countess of Salisbury.[1][2] His birth date is uncertain but may have been about 1216.[3]
Between 8 Feb 1242/1243 and 16 Dec 1244 he married Emeline de Riddlesford[4] (d. between 18 May 1275 and 19 July 1276), widow of Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster (d. 1242) and daughter and coheiress. of Walter de Ridelisford.[4] They had two daughters:
His older brother William granted him the manor of King's Sutton, Northamptonshire in 1241 and that of Wamborough, Wiltshire in 1243.[6]
Stephen Longespée: was seneschal of Gascony in 1253.[1]
In 1258, when the future Edward I was persuaded to accept the Provisions of Oxford, Stephen was one of four barons appointed to oversee Prince Edward's conduct.[6]
He was Governor of Ireland from 1258 to his death.[1][7]
He died in 1260 and was buried at Lacock Priory, Wiltshire, with his heart being interred at Bradenstoke Priory.[6]
