About
The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

    Tips for Liberty Island
I’ve visited Liberty island four times. This time I visited the crown (first time opening since 2020). The statue is something to see at least once, there are restrooms on site, a basic cafe with mediocre food, and the rangers are super welcoming and informative. Now, some things you need to know: Unless you’re with a tour group, you must purchase tickets through Statue City Cruises. This can be done on site at Castle Clinton or online, but I recommend online. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis island sites are free of charge for entry. The entire fee you pay is for the ferry. Next, you should arrive early to get through security. They generally recommend a couple of hours, and the line gets really long FAST. However, something I learned today: security does not open until 8:30 AM. Also, if you have a crown ticket, you have to go to castle Clinton first to check in and get your wristband. Then report to security. Crown tickets sell out weeks to months in advance and a single person can only purchase tickets once every six months. For crown and pedestal, no bags of any kind. There are lockers on site for a quarter (cash). There is a change machine, but bring some singles. It’s only around a 160 steps to the crown, but they are steep and narrow. There are places to rest, but the whole journey is tight, so those who are claustrophobic won’t care for this. That being said, it’s over 200 steps to the pedestal. There is an elevator, but it must be ranger operated, and they weren’t doing it the day I went. Total steps I did: 377. The space up top is also pretty tight, but the view is pretty cool and you can see parts of the statue you’d never see otherwise. Going down the steps is easier, but some prefer to do it backwards because of the narrow nature. Overall, great experience to do at least once. Another tip: if you’re not on a schedule, and want to see both, go to ellis island first. Almost everyone gets off at the Statue of Liberty first, so if you go to ellis island first thing in the morning, you’ll have it mostly to yourself. Ellis island also is hard hat tours (reviewed separately).

Great experience with views from the boat and close up
We booked the standard Statue City Cruises tickets using our CityPass (booking time slot and entry all worked perfectly and got a bit of a discount too!) There were short queues to get in at Battery Park, through security and onto the boat but nothing too bad. The boat was well organised with three decks to view from including an open air top. We walked around Liberty Island, past the statue and through the museum, then back on the boat to Ellis Island for a look around the Immigration Museum (larger than expected!) then final boat back to Manhattan. This was a great way to do it with great views of the Statue from the boats and from the ground (and New York from the boat). Allow half a day - there is a bit of queueing to get on-off the boats but it was definitely worth it!

    Tour ran like clockwork
I pre-booked with Statue city cruises and despite the large number of visitors it ran very smoothly. There’s airport style security for checking in so it’s best to not bring a lot with you, although a face mask is needed. I pre booked to make sure to get a Pedestal ticket which was well worth it as you get to see up inside to see some of the internal framework, and get some great views from the pedestal walkway. On Liberty island there’s a museum and free audio guides too. The second stop is Ellis island before returning back to Battery park and it all ran like clockwork. I’m glad I got to visit the actual island as previously I’d only seen the statue from afar. A must do when in NYC!

We used the ferry beside Battery Park to visit the Statue of Liberty but had to book in advance. Although the ferries were very busy it was well organised and efficient. I also booked entrance tickets for the statue itself for the pedestal. Once on Liberty island it was a short walk to the statue. You have to place bags in a locker before entering and once inside you can climb to the top of the pedestal easily for great views. We didn’t pay the extra to go up to the crown. There is a small exhibition in the pedestal entrance but the separate museum has a good display. The gift shops have a good selection of things to buy and the food in the cafe is very good and excellent value for money.

We were able to book a pedestal reserve ticket about 5 days out from our trip using city state cruises- no crown tickets available as they book out months in advance. If you have no desire to walk the museum or island and just want to ferry by you can take the ferry for free with a good view of Lady liberty. There is an elevator going to the pedestal but almost 200 narrow steps to the crown. Must be in somewhat good shape! Allow more time than you planned for - we didn’t even get off at Ellis island because it had already been 3 hours and we didn’t want to eat at the on-site cafe. 😩 the museum was excellent. There is a station in the gift shop where you can stamp your passport with the date you visited, so cool!

Visitation was restricted to the base of the statue as of the date of this review. Visits to the crown were on hold due to COVID. There is a tour of the interior of the base, but a reservation is required.
Also, there is a museum to the left rear as you exit the ferry. This museum documents the genesis of the statue, design, prototype, construction, and delivery to New York via a short video and artifacts. Access is available to the top of the museum with spectacular views of New York harbor and Manhattan.
Tickets for the ferry service to the statue and Ellis Island are available on line or at the walk up booth in Battery Park.
Anticipate 3 to 5 hours for a visit to both the statue and Ellis.

Well worth paying a little bit extra to climb up the inside of the statue to the crown, though not for those with any type of mobility issues. Buy your tickets through Statue City Cruises, very reasonable and the only ones who can give you access to the crown. Once on the island you can stay as long as you want, also take you to Ellis island.

My oh my, THIS! This place was everything I dreamed of and more.

I've been wanting to visit this since I was a kid, which seems like forever ago 🤪.

It did NOT disappoint.

First the ferry to get you here was fun and gave tons of info and had fun souvenirs such as Liberty crown headbands, light up Liberty statues, stuffed dogs and magnets. All affordable.

When we got to Liberty Island, we had to put our stuff in a locker, so be sure you have a quarter. Can't take anything but your phone.

We had to go through security for obvious reasons, but it was relatively quick.

We then headed inside, which immediately you see beautiful stairs ahead.

There's an elevator for the disabled, as it might not seem like a lot of stairs to able-bodied, but for those with bad knees and/or bad bones, breathing issues, etc., that can be quite difficult.

Also due to Covid, they only allow one person to be in the elevator at a time, unless it is someone pushing a wheelchair or someone with a small child.

We actually got pedestal tickets which we bought straight off of Statue of Liberty's website, as apparently third hand sites can't guarantee the same kind of access. Am I glad we did. That view from the top is so amazing, I really can't even put into words.

It's so serene and peaceful, even despite the helicopters flying around.

Right now, they are not allowing anyone into the crown.

The park rangers are super helpful and very friendly.

You can go on all levels. But really, I think the best one is the one right before ground level because you can actually get photos with Liberty's face.

There's plenty of space to walk on that level, but the top level not so much. And that mid-level has very limited seating. Maybe one or two benches.

Just be sure if you are getting off the elevator, to ask to get on that biggest platform so that you can get photos with her face. You don't want to remember after you've already exited out of the gate. I'm telling you, it is such a fantastic photo opportunity.

I highly highly recommend this.

Childhood dream come true!

Maybe one of the best sites we visited in New York. We enjoyed it a lot. We booked the crown access 3 months in advance. We boarded the ferry from battery park and got off at liberty island. This iconic statue is beautiful and huge. You cannot take bags, backpacks or even small handbags in to the pedestal or the crown so you'd have to leave them in a locker which will take a quarter. The spiral staircase on to the crown is very narrow so make sure that you wear appropriate shoes. But its a short climb and before you know it you'll be inside the crown! The view from the crown was spectacular. It was not crowded inside the crown the day we went so we could have hanged around as much as we wanted. The museum was very informative and had very good exhibits. There is a gift shop, restaurant and an ice cream shop as well. We then got on to the ferry and got off at the Ellis island. The museum is so big that you'll need at least a whole day to explore all the exhibits and rooms. It was great visit and you'll need at least a day to explore everything.

We took the ferry in Manhattan and there were some long waiting lines. Obviously many people got on the ferry and many of them stood on the edge, which did not allow those who were seated to appreciate the views of the city.
In Staten Island everything was very nice and orderly despite the fact that there were many people. It was a very beautiful and impressive experience to see the Statue of Liberty up close, one of the most representative symbols not only of New York but of the United States.
The souvenir shop experience was a bit unpleasant. The prices of the souvenirs are a bit high and despite that, some of those who attend there, do not want to give a bag and wrap things in paper.
Despite this, it was a pleasant experience that remains in the memory.

Yes, COVID rates have declined, but at the SofL, and specifically Statue Cruises ferry, you’d never know COVID exists. No social distancing- ferry staff actually forced people to crowd together on a line that had been socially distant. We were corralled like livestock waiting for the return to NYC ferry. Mask usage is practically nonexistent, and staff on the ferry, and indoor exhibits, weren’t enforcing the mask or distancing rule. We ended our day early and skipped Ellis Island because it felt unsafe to do any other indoor stuff if people - many foreign tourists - were not following rules re: masks and staff refused to enforce it.

I’m vaxxed, but if I get COVID, I’ll know where I got it.

If you're on a tight budget or have too many other things to see and do in the area, you might want to see the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry, which is free of charge. However, for a more in-depth experience, buy the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry tickets from the official Statue City Cruises website. Besides the Statue, there is a museum, gift shop, and cafe on Liberty Island. You don't need to PAY for a tour because a self-guided audio tour (available in different languages) is available for no extra charge! The Statue of Liberty is definitely worth a visit once in your lifetime and whenever you're hosting a new visitor to NYC! <3

We had a fantastic day, unfortunately it was raining in the morning but by lunchtime it had turned to be sunny and warm.
Be warned that there is a lot of queues as you enter for tickets, security ( airport style) and for the boat, so those less able to stand like me might find this challenging. On the boats however there are areas specifically for disabled passengers to sit, either side just as you enter, and the crew are helpful on boarding and alighting if you need it.

On the day we visited I unfortunately couldn’t take my own wheelchair as the lift (elevator) at our hotel was broken, so I couldn’t get it down from the 7th floor! I discovered however that you can borrow a manual wheelchair at the information desk in both Liberty and Ellis islands, you just need to give them a photo ID to hold onto, this was great except for one thing and this is the reason I scored 4 instead of 5, the wheelchair was too wide for some of the doorways! So I couldn’t get into the gift shop! As only one door opened and I also couldn’t get through the door to the restroom, although on Ellis island I actually got into the restroom but then couldn’t get into the disabled cubicle! And it was slalom like in the cafe on Liberty island which was difficult as my husband had the tray of food and as you leave the cashier area there are tables with high stools and if it is busy then it can be problematic and when we finally made it through there wasn’t an automatic disabled door (as there wasn’t in lots of the buildings). Now saying all this if I had my own electric wheelchair this may not have been such an issue as my chair is narrower than the one I borrowed! But I still would have needed help with a lot of the doors, it was quite disappointing that It was not more disabled friendly.
