Stan Freberg

Stan Freberg (August 7, 1926 - April 7, 2015) was an American comedian, radio personality, and voice actor.

Freberg is known for his novelty records, including two installments of Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America, parody versions of songs such as “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Banana Boat”, “The Great Pretender”, and “The Yellow Rose of Texas”, and original songs such as “John and Marsha”, “The Quest For Bridey Hammerschlaugen”, “St. George and the Dragonet”, and “Tele-Vee-Shun”.

Freberg first recorded voiceover for the unfinished Warner Bros. cartoon For He's a Jolly Good Fala in the mid-1940s. He would later portray Pete Puma, Junior Bear (following the death of Kent Rogers), Bertie (of Hubie and Bertie), Chester the Terrior, and Tosh (of Mac and Tosh, the Goofy Gophers) for the Looney Tunes series, among other characters. He also voiced Cage E. Coyote, the father of Wile E. Coyote, in the 2000 short Little Go Beep.

Freberg's other voiceover roles include Cecil the Seasick Serpent and Dishonest John from Beany and Cecil, the beaver from Lady and the Tramp, Albert Alligator from I Go Pogo, the narrator of Disney’s Wuzzles, and Mo-Ron/Bo-Ron from Freakazoid!.

Freberg had live action appearances in films such as Callaway Went Thataway and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. In The Weird Al Show, he portrayed J.B. Toppersmith and Papa Boolie. He appeared for one week on The Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour in 1983.

Freberg's satirical humor has impacted many commercial campaigns, including "Who put eight great tomatoes in that little bitty can?" (for Contadina Tomato Paste), "Jacobsen mowers. Faster... than sheep!" (voiced by Bill Woodson), "Have a Pizza Roll, kemo sabe?" (for Jeno's pizza rolls), and "Today, the pits; tomorrow, the wrinkles. Sunsweet marches on!" (for Sunsweet pitted prunes; another one featured Freberg's friend Ray Bradbury).

Trivia

• One Garfield comic strip featured "John and Marsha" on the television set. Garfield changes the channel, only to find another couple saying each other's names.
• June Foray, Jesse White, and Shepard Menken were among the voices heard on the first volume of Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America. The second volume included the former two, as well as Lorenzo Music.
• According to Mark Evanier, "Rodent Rebellion" is Freberg's last voiceover appearance in an animated feature.
