- R K LSeattle, Washington2,562 contributionsSimple elegance...Famous for Jean Calvin having preached there, St. Peter's Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland was the embodiment of simple elegance. Compared to the glitz exhibited in houses of worship of other faiths, the apparent lack of pretentiousness was striking. The huge pipe organ at the rear of the cathedral has been described by some as looking like a crown. However, to me, it appeared to be more like a silver and gold angel. Even without climbing either of the two towers, a visit to the cathedral is well worth the effort.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 20, 2023
- Scott GLos Angeles, California486 contributionsThe most striking part of the Geneva skylineI only had about 5 hours to explore Geneva, so after visiting the lake jet up close I made a beeline right for the most prominent architecture in Old Town, this cathedral. It stands out in both height and beauty from the other Old Town buildings, and is the definite highlight of the area. The area round it is cool too, but not terribly quaint I would say. Even Old Town felt a tad bit cookie cutter to me, many of the buildings very simple and similar to each other. Still beautiful, but a bit more standardized and sanitized than other more quirky, less uniform cities in Europe. Honestly 5 hours seemed like more than enough to get a good sense of Old Town and the water jet, thankfully. If I visit again I'd only want to do CERN and the United Nations. Very glad I got to see Geneva!Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten July 29, 2023

- permia41,061 contributionsElegantSo many aspects to gaze at, and this is only on the exteriors. Overall Gothic in style it was commenced in the 1160s. It converted to the Reformed Church and interestingly was the mother church for Calvin, one of the Reformation's leaders. Stepping in the wonders continue. Soaring slender columns reach to the grand ceiling. Awe inspiring is the vista along the glorious nave. Ascending the multitude of steps to the towers was wonderful. Passing along great robust wooden beams plus the belfry was exciting. Emerging into the blue sky sunlight was superb. All round panoramas were inspiring, including magnificent views of the Lake and Jet d'Eau.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 21, 2023
- Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,044 contributionsBeautiful church by the small town squareThis was pretty well tucked in Old Town Geneva and it blended really well with surroundings. I went a little too early so the church was closed. But the surrounding square was pristine and it was such a relaxing moment to just observe the old town in a quiet atmosphere early in the morning.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 22, 2023

At first I loved it, of course when I saw how many stairs there were, I felt out of love, however once you reach the top of the cathedral you will be able to see an amazing view. I also got on time for the bell, ao it was lovely.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 26, 2024
- SteviefullKidderminster, United Kingdom1,754 contributionsA Great Way To See The CityIf you are just going to have a look around the Cathedral it has free entry although it is worth paying the extra (£10.00ish) to go up the towers and visit the archeological site. You can probably spend 30 minutes looking around the cathedral area and the Maccabees chapel if you were in a hurry and about the same up the tower taking in the views across Geneva. Add on to this the archeological site and you have a 60-90minute stay overall. I'm far from religeous but it is well worth the visit for the building itself and the views and for Geneva the relatively low price.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 26, 2024

The St Pierre Cathedral was initially built as a Roman Catholic church and today stands as a Protestant church.Located in Geneva's Old Town, St Pierre has amazingly beautiful stained glass adorning the cathedral. There is an archeological museum under the cathedral. The chapel was built in the 15th century. If you have time to climb up the church, you will see an amazing view of the lake and the old town.

The cathedral itself is free to visit. For Protestants, this is a very historic place to visit due to its role in the Reformation.
The only charges are to climb the tower or visit the archeological museum in the basement.
Both are worth doing, although the archeological museum is poorly organized. Without the self-guided audio tour, you really don't know what way to go or what you're looking at.
The cathedral itself doesn't really have any information or placards. Unless you hire a guide or buy one of the guidebooks you probably won't know what you're looking at inside the cathedral.
They could definitely improve that part of the visitor experience. For visitors who are religious, regular Protestant church services are held in the cathedral.

We came to view the place where John Calvin the great reformation saint preached. The cathedral architecture is magnificent with its tall ceilings, domes and arches and stained glass windows. The huge pipe organ sits on a 2nd level behind the pews. A small pipe organ is on the left wing in the front near the pulpit. There is also a choir stall and a chair where John Calvin sits and the small pulpit where he used to preach.
We visited the Towers of the cathedral and had to climb the many steps to the pinnacle. When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a 360 degree view of the city. Along the way, you will come across the huge bells. It is worth the climb.

Only 157 steps lead you to the top. There are 2 towers. On the South one, you a nice view but it's not an open view. One the North one find a small hidden black door and you will get to the top to have a well deserved reward such as an open and great view over the water jet and the mountains and more. The entrance to the towers costs 7 suiss francs for one person. Don't miss it !

I will list this as the must-see of Geneva as others don't miss this. It is definitely worth climbing up to the tower to have a view of the whole city, the lake and the Alps. The tower path is somehow a maze, don't miss the route to the open top. Stunning!

My husband and I use the spire of Saint Pierre to orient ourself when we feel we’ve lost our direction. The Cathedral has nice stained glass windows. It was dark inside because the light shining through them are dim. It was either overcast or raining every day when we visited Geneva. The Cathedral is very beautiful. There aren’t that many cathedrals in existence anymore. It is nice that this one is still well preserved.

The cathedral has similar structure to many others, but the walls are bare which emphasizes the architecture of the building. The climb to the towers provides a great view of the city as well as the bells. The archeological site under the cathedral is huge. The entrance ticket includes an audio guide which is excellent. It is so big with multiple places to explore that ew did get turned around a couple of times, but it was easy to get back on track with the guide. Multiple well preserved walls from the various prior cathedrals on the site.

Beautiful cathedral inside with lovely stain glass. The main highlight though was the 5 franc ticket to see the towers of the cathedral, amazing views of all of Geneva and incredibly insightful to see the inner workings of the cathedral. Definitely worth it.

Somewhat hidden behind other buildings and doesn’t appear to be the centre of the city. The tower sticks out but doesn’t necessarily overly impress from a distance. To get to see the detail you need to be right up close. Once in the old town you can find yourself walking around the tight little streets and finally make it to the square with the impressive looking columns and grand staircase. Its well maintained exterior looks very clean. I could not go in at the time as there was some kind of organ playing and appeared closed to the public. Walk around the other aspects of it and you could get a better look at the towers and spire. Definitely better at close quarters but seen more imposing and dramatic cathedrals.

The trips up the south and north towers are brilliant with great views of the whole city and mountains. Those are worth it. If you time it right you can be up there to see the bells ringing on the hour. The inside of the church itself doesn't have too much to see.

We used a taxi. It’s the quickest way, especially with two kids in tow. It costs about 40 Swiss francs
Hi, is it easy to find you way around? Is there a desk which you can pay to go up in the tower

Hi Sophie, The cathedral is not that big so you don’t need any guides or maps. For going up you need to pay inside and yes There is always someone to help.

Hi, kanjer2015. What would you like to know about this attraction?
When I looked at the Cathedral website it was all in French (sorry do not speak French)and I could not find or try to decipher the opening times anywhere. Can anyone please help as we would really like to visit it. From from I could see the Secretariat was only open during the week - is the cathedral not open at weekends? Surely it must be open on sundays?

Hi, do you know any inexpensive stay for short term theological study in Geneva? Maybe like dorm of a seminary or retreat place of a church there? Thanks
