St. Bernard's School Reviews
Rating 4.2 out of 5 5 reviews
I am familiar with St. Bernard's School, an all-boys K-8 school; Horace Mann School, a co-educational K-12 school; and The Chapin School, an all-girls K-12 school. All three are among the country's finest schools. Of the three, St. Bernard's has the most rigorous curriculum in grades K-8. By the eighth grade, St. Bernard's boys, especially those in the advanced sections of Latin, French, and Math, are 1 to 3 years ahead in all subjects. They know how to read with understanding and write and speak with persuasion. The faculty includes a disproportionately large share of superstars—teachers with doctoral or master's degrees in subject-matter disciplines or in education, and who also have the gift of entertaining and engaging boys. Because class sizes are small, the school offers only the major interscholastic sports including soccer, baseball, hockey, basketball, track, and lacrosse (no racquet sports). The community of St. Bernard's families is exceptional.
A magical place. My son is known and seen here. The quality of the faculty is outstanding. The boys are uniformly bright, thoughtful, and kind. Strong emphasis placed on character. The academics are rigorous and the method of teaching is traditional, so perhaps not the right fit for every boy. But for the right boy, there is no better education.
Not what it used to be. Cliquey, all white parent body. No socio-emotional awareness or education. Outdated science and language curriculum. Hello hell of 9th grade admissions.
