    April 22, 2024-- Aiden Lynch accomplished several things in his dominant start last Monday, a 9-0 win for High School South.First, the shutout earned the Indians their first win of the campaign, a much-needed victory following five tough losses to begin the season.

  • Town Hall Meetings Underway to Discuss Regionalization, Referendum

    March 19, 2024-- Since the district was granted state approval to host a referendum to welcome Seaside Heights into its regional district-- the public vote is April 16-- Superintendent Michael Citta (above) announced a series of Town Hall meetings to educate the public, which began yesterday evening at High School North.
  • South Relay Team Hurdles Way to All-American Status

    Congratulations to High School South's Justin Coston, Tyler Kopin, Antonio Manganiello, and Giovanni Morales-Torres, whose stellar performance at the Virginia Beach Adidas Track Nationals this past weekend in the 60M Shuttle Hurdle Relay-- a speedy time of 33.40-- earned them third place and the title of All Americans!

    March 18, 2024-- Students from throughout the district attended and competed at the 2024 Jersey Shore Science Fair March 16 at Stockton University. It was a strong showing all around as usual; all of Intermediate South's competitors, for example, placed, which delighted (above, top row, left) science fair coordinator Jessica Kurtz, High School East STEAM Academy senior competitor Jack Chen (top row, right), and the Seminole science stars.
  • Dood's Donuts Bring Out the Smiles for Students, Staff

    South's administration awarded the junior class with Uncle Dood's donuts today for their great job and participation in NJGPA testing this week, and this gesture not only brought out the (Irish) smiles for students, but also Supervisor Heather Pentifallo and Assistant Principal John Oberti. After all, the joy is really in the giving, right? And distributing more than 375 delicious Dood's donuts meant a LOT of giving.

    March 15, 2024-- Students from High School South, North, and East attended the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference in Atlantic City March 11 through 13, where they competed in a variety of topics ranging from business and financial planning, to coding and programming.

  • 'Anything Goes' at HSS March 7-9

    Set sail with High School South for their production of Cole Porter’s sharp and sophisticated musical comedy, Anything Goes! The toe-tapping, hilarious, classic musical will be presented in the High School South cafetorium Thursday, March 7; Friday, March 8; and Saturday, March 9. All performances start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 each; $5 for students with their school ID.

  • French Club Cooks Up Crepes

    The French Club's crepes-themed event Feb. 14 was a blast, by all accounts. Students cooked up homemade crepes and personalized them using Nutella, ice cream, strawberries, and more of their favorite toppings. It was a fun and delicious day for all!

    Jan. 29, 2024-- Joey Taliercio scored with one second remaining to give South-East (SEAST) hockey a thrilling 4-3 win over Lacey on Friday, Jan. 26. The victory, which moved the team to 10-5-1 on the season, clinched the division for the first time in the co-op's history.
  • Santos Sets New South Shot Put Mark

    Fresh of their Ocean County Championships win, HSS Juniors Kendall Howe (left) and Julia Santos struck double-gold at the Shore Conference Championships Jan. 25.   • German Exchange Student Receives Proper South Sendoff

    Jan. 24, 2024-- High School South's varsity cheerleading team, including coaches Katie Stein and Charlene Wallace, gave a formal farewell to their teammate, Mathilda Walendy, a German exchange student who joined them for the 2023-2024 football and basketball seasons.

    Jan. 16, 2024-- High School South's girls shot put team was in action at the Group 3 Relay Championships this past Sunday, Jan. 14. The duo of junior Julia Santos and freshman Caila Oltmer had a convincing victory over the 30-plus team field.
  • Clinch for Lynch as South's First 'Ultimate Senior'

    Jan. 12, 2024-- Last night saw High School South name its first Ultimate Senior. The inaugural event was organized by Eloise Weintraub, who helped gather participating seniors to be judged on formal wear, casual wear, talent, and their responses to a question-and-answer segment.

    Jan. 8, 2024-- The 2022 NJ State Teacher of the Year, Toms River’s own Christine Girtain, is currently in Houston attending a convention for state teachers of the year.
  • Newspapers Collected for Animals

    The French National Honor Society held a successful donation drive, collecting old newspapers which will help keep birds and small critters warm and clean throughout winter at the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge. “This success shows the strong spirit of our school community, and we are excited to keep supporting those in need,” said South’s Constance Signorin.

  • ESL Students Meet Elf on the Shelf

    During the school's first year with the English as a second language (ESL) program, students unfamiliar with the tradition were able to meet Elf of the Shelf in person. Andres Reyes Ariza, Liliana Burgos Santos, Gisell Osorio Ramirez, Rogelio Luna, Juan Sebastian Bedoya Londono, Juliana Perez Gil, Tayra Aniceto Malique, Silvia Bravo De La Rez, and Yadira Romero spent time with the elf, a.k.a. Assistant Principal Chris Peck, as ESL teacher Mrs. Passarella joins in. Happy holidays!
  • Atrium Anthems Delight District

    Dec. 21, 2023-- As is tradition, students from all three high schools visited the district's business offices today at 1144 Hooper Avenue, and they brought with them instruments, their beautiful voices, and a strong dose of holiday cheer.
  • South Students Shop, Sing, Spread Spirit

    Dec. 19, 2023: In early December, High School South Spirit Club members including Morgan Adams, Jordyn Lynch, Katie Dukett, Emma Stich, and Rob Pierson and Emma Stich went holiday shopping for the kids at the RWJBarnabas Health Children’s Specialized Hospital in Toms River, as well as adults at the Hampton Ridge Nursing Home.
  • Philly's Christmas Village Hosts German Club

    The German Club took a cultural trip to the Christmas Village in Philadelphia Dec. 7. The Village contains a German-style Christmas market, complete with food and craft vendors designed to mimic the classic Weihnachtsmärkte popular in Germany during the holidays. Students shopped, ate traditional foods like Bratwurst, Spätzle, and Kartoffelpuffer, ice skated and rode a carousel and Ferris wheel.
  • Challenge Day Brings Out the Smiles, Hugs at HSS

    Dec. 14, 2023-- Challenge Day, a program that “provides youth and their communities with experiential programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth and full expression,” debuted last year at High School North thanks to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

    Dec. 5, 2023-- Following the Christmas tree lighting in downtown Toms River Dec. 1, Ocean County Library granted the High School South choir use of its Constellation Room so students could record a few pieces in an open environment with ideal acoustics.

    Dec. 4, 2023-- In the summer of 2021, in advance of a pep rally in honor of P. David Correll, Amanda Fear and Joanna Sabato Eisman penned a lengthy and heartfelt tribute to the man, the longtime "Voice of the Indians" and a High School South institution, for Jersey Shore Online.

    The mentor club hosted a Thanksgiving Extravaganza Nov. 21 in the Recreation Station, and the event included a hand-turkey station. Modeling theirs are teacher Mat Sohl and student Dan Barry. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • French National Honor Society Welcomes HSS Members

    Congratulations to the exceptional students who were welcomed into the French National Honor Society at the Oct. 19 induction ceremony. The school extends its gratitude to everyone who contributed to making the evening more memorable. As Charlemagne famously stated, "To have a second language is to have a second soul."
  • South Football Wins Liberty Division

    Oct. 23, 2023-- With their 41-20 win over Central Regional this past Friday, High School South locked up the Liberty Division title. The team now advances to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 quarterfinals, where they'll face Colts Neck on the road Oct.
  • Mary Highton Gets Nod as Influential Tribe Leader

    South’s “Leader of the Tribe” committee, tasked with acknowledging excellent staff members, today recognized math teacher Mary Highton. “Teaching Algebra 1 and AP Calc, Mrs. Highton influences many students in the building and we truly could not be luckier to have her as part of our math department,” they said during morning announcements.   • South Mentoring Club Kicks Off its ’23-’24 Schedule

    Assistant Principal Mark Sullivan, founder of the High School South Mentoring Club, meets with Superintendent Citta and Assistant Superintendent Thomas at the kickoff event for this year's club event schedule. In 2023-2024, the club will pair each of its more than 60 students with a mentor from the Indian faculty and staff, continuing its legacy as a sustainable building-level support system for students and a critical element of the infrastructure that helps maintain the culture at South, where kindness matters.

  • South Voted Best Marching Band in Ocean County

    Oct. 12, 2023-- A WOBM poll has named High School South the best band in Ocean County, which serves as a title defense. Representing the Marching Indians are, from left to right, Eden Sanzone, Mario McCoy, and Cecilia Villanueva, and photobombing "the sound of the Indians" is, appropriately, "the voice of the Indians," Dave Correll.
  • Christine Girtain Receives Award for Teaching Excellence

    She is one of only 43 educators from across the United States to win the prestigious award from the NEA Foundation.
  • South Takes Early Attendance Lead

    After one month, HSS has pulled into the lead for attendance rate among high schools, thanks in large part to the September perfect attendance winners including, from left to right, freshman Nyla Salley, sophomore Christina Brennan, senior Nick Damiano, freshman Kevin Loveday, sophomore Trey Collick-Stafford, senior Mia Applegate, and juniors Silvia Bravo De La Rez and Stephanie Carol (not pictured).   • Can't Duck Away from Kindness at South

    High School South's Kindness Club filled teacher and staff mailboxes with Kindness Ducks, and helped hang banners around the school that read, "Be Indianific, Kindness Matters!"
  • Spirit Leaders Spark Super Successful Chipotle Night Fundraiser

    It was a super successful Chipotle Night Fundraiser Sept. 19, thanks in large part to the efforts of High School South’s spirit leaders including (from back to front) Logan Redgrave, Spirit 25; Brady Krohn, Indian 56; Caroline Edwards, Indian Princess 54; and Katie Duckett, Super Maroon 54.
  • NHS Members Inducted

    The evening of June 1, 25 members of the National Honors Society were sworn into the Indian Chapter at High School South. Congratulations to all those selected!
  • Students Recognized at Scholarship Breakfast

    Congratulations to Ryan Svenson, Evan Ryan, Justin Newman, and James Brierley for attending the Ocean County Superintendents' roundtable student recognition and Mayor's scholarship breakfast.
  • Dakota Foylin Wins Graduation Tassel Contest

    South’s Spirit Club held a Graduation Tassel Contest where seniors had to guess how many strings are on a graduation tassel to win a prize package that includes hair, nails, tanning, flowers, and food. Dakota Foylin won the contest with the correct number of 65 strings. Congrats Dakota!   • Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

    During Teacher Appreciation Week, all staff at High School South enjoyed special surprises including gift card raffles, personalized Indian mugs, and thank you notes from students. South was especially appreciative of several downtown businesses including Taco-Tastic, A Thyme for All Seasons, Uncle Dood's, Capone's, Safu Sushi, and Tommy Boy's Cafe that showed support for the staff by donating delicious food!
  • German Club Visits DC

    South’s German Club took a trip to Washington, DC April 29. At the Capitol, students visited historic Georgetown University, enjoyed a buffet of authentic German foods at Old Europe restaurant, and then participated in a scavenger hunt of the monuments on the National Mall. This is an annual trip that Herr DeMarco and the HSS German Club have been organizing for 14 years.
  • Kassidy Colangelo an 'Athlete to Know'

    Congratulations to Kassidy Colangelo on being named one of the “Top 50 High School Athletes to Know" by the Asbury Park Press. This follows APP’s Players of the Week for all spring sports for week 4, during which Kassidy notched a home run, single, and four RBI in HSS’s 15-1 victory over Point Pleasant Beach.
