- Dr_XaosPalatine, IL1,199 contributionsVisited this location with my teenage daughter on a weekday afternoon during her winter break from school. Museum had a special deal for free admission for students, so we took advantage of the discount. However, even if we didn't, prices are reasonable considering just how much this museum offers.
The permanent exhibit on the main floor is both extensive and impressive. They provide a comprehensive review of the holocaust, which starts with the a brief review of Jewish history before getting into the details of the build up to the holocaust. Most of the museum walkthrough does a really great job of moving things forward in a logical and mostly chronological fashion, so that one can see how things progressed and why. Ultimately ends with post-WWII view and how the holocaust affected things afterward. We spent a couple hours touring the main exhibit, and we could have definitely spent another hour or two to more thoroughly view and review all of the artifacts and details that they present.
We also spent another couple of hour viewing other aspects of the museum (beyond the main exhibit). We attended their interactive hologram presentation with a holocaust survivor, Fritzie Fritzshall. Presentation and interaction was both informative and very moving. We also briefly walked through some of the more temporary exhibits and took a few moments in the Hall of Reflections to truly appreciate everything we'd seen.Written January 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The park opened to public in 2002; its two-mile path smoothly waves through the park grounds, that have a naturally landscaped look -- which in fact, is a result of smart planning and developing the ground covering, planting the trees, arranging the flowers, and placing picnic tables and benches in this attractive area.
Spacious, free parking is available, there are many info signs, there's the map of the park and its amenities. The directions to various parts of the park, and to some other adjacent parks are clearly displayed, as well.
A very memorable collection of modern art sculptures makes the park even more attractive. Sculptures are well-marked, and spaciously placed on the park grounds along the path, so if you walk two miles, you'll be able to see dozens of sculptures, representing contemporary art works by some very talented artists.
Abstract compositions were very enjoyable to look at, drawing attention to their forms and titles, and obviously playing on imagination. Abstract art basically gives me the ultimate freedom of perception and conceptual interpretation. And the sculptures, displayed in this park were wonderful in this respect. I also have to say, that many other sculptures, representing modern monumental art were absolutely striking and memorable.
December of course, is not the best time to visit the park, but we enjoyed it, regardless, since all the sculptures made the beautiful park look and feel like a large modern art gallery in the open air.
Thank you, Skokie.Written January 26, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Scott SGlenview, IL58 contributionsI love this place. Small converted movie house is attractive and intimate with comfortable seating. Have nor used the restroom, which, as I remember from movie days, were tiny. They must have been improved after the extensive renovation.
A very nice feature is the parking options, if you can find your way around the building. After parking in a free municipal parking lot a short walk behind the theater, I saw a row of diagonal spaces right along the side. There are street spaces too.
Pricing is appropriate for the type of show. I just saw "Falling in Love with Love" about Lorenzo Hart and Richard Rodgers ("Rodgers and Hart") which was well worth the $38.00 with discounts available. A few years ago they presented an excellent "The Drowsy Chaperone"; a Broadway classic and much bigger show for about the same price. But even the small cast of the Hart show (his lyrics and their fit into Rodgers melodies is sublime) had live offstage accompaniment for their capable voices.
But this theater has a wide variety of shows, and I would not suggest that all are equally good or aimed at a wide audience. Best to check their website. "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" is coming in November. Can't wait! Come a bit early if you like a certain seat as I don't believe reserved seating is offered on any shows. But there are no "bad" seats.Written October 11, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I left with a handful of small '80s trinkets and a 14" potbellied, stuffed, jointed moose.
There were at least a dozen other unique items that caught my eye.
It required my last ounce of self-control to leave them in the shop.
Her eclectic inventory and fair prices are that attractive.
But like both the Terminator and General MacArthur, I will make a reappearance.
If you, like me, have strong hunter/gatherer genes in your DNA, you will love this store.Written February 10, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. When nothing came up on her first try looking for the plot number, , she suggested trying a different spelling of the first name. It worked. Everything matched. She emailed us maps with exact locations specified of our lost relative plus other family members that we knew were buried at Memorial Park. When we arrived after hours at the cemetery, it was easy to locate the graves using her maps.
We are forever grateful that we were able to visit the graves so easily Also, the cemetery is so beautifully maintained. The next day when we visited, the caretakers working nearby even loaned us a tool to use to prune a plant at one of the graves.Written October 30, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - illinois travelere1,760 contributionsThe log cabin is the oldest residence in Skokie (1847). It was moved to this location in 1982 and reconstructed in the same manner in which it was originally built.
The engine house fulfilled many additional functions over the years -- jail, school, meeting rooms, etc.
The laundry wall was preserved when the business was torn down in 2011. It preserves the village's original name -- Niles Centre -- and the year, 1925.
In 1940 the residents voted to change the name to "Skokie" -- from a Native American word meaning "marsh."
Admission is free and there is a parking lot.
There are many restaurants in the area and the public library is practically across the street, so you can make a nice outing out of your visit.Written June 25, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Allen21096Chicago, IL29,714 contributionsAs it turns out, Shop Local Skokie is located in the Skokie City hall, which is in the heart of downtown Skokie, Il. There are a couple of entities within local government who are trying to build up the business, where you can get more information about local business to shop in or even how to get started in a local business. There is the Skokie Chamber of Commerce, along with the Skokie Economic Development Commission. There are plenty of businesses in the immediate area of the Skokie City Hall, including a variety of restaurants, i.e. fast food, Italian, Mexican, bakeries and moreWritten September 4, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - illinois travelere1,760 contributionsBecause this area is along the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River, there were homesteads here, but the land was never plowed/farmed. Therefore the dreaded buckthorn and other invasive plant species never gained a foothold here.
Harms Woods incorporates seven different sections. Come for spring wildflowers, bird watching, fall foliage, horseback riding, hiking, photography, etc.
Plenty of parking.Written April 21, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
