Son of John Grey of Howick and Margaret Pearson. Paternal grandson of John Grey of Acton and Dorothy Lisle. His grandfather inherited Howick on the death of his elder brother in 1667.
Henry married Hannah Wood, daughter of Thomas Wood of Burton and Fallodon, on 19 April 1720.
Together they were parents to five sons - Sir Henry, 2nd Baronet, who died unmarried; John Grey of Southwark; Thomas, who was killed in a duel with the Earl of Pomfret; Charles, created 1st Earl Grey in 1806; and Ralph Grey of Preston.
In addition they had four daughters - Jane, Hannah, Margaret and Elizabeth - but only two are known to have married.
His widow died in 1764.
