Editorial Reviews
Two complete tribute albums Dinah Washington devoted to jazz and blues icons: Dinah Sings Bessie Smith (EmArcy MG-36130), taped in 1957-58 with a band led by saxophonist Eddie Chamblee, and Dinah Washington Sings Fats Waller (EmArcy MG-36119), recorded in 1957 with orchestra conducted by Ernie Wilkins. Both masterpieces showcase a myriad of great soloists, such as Clark Terry, Johnny Coles, Quentin Jackson, Julian Priester, Jimmy Cleveland, Benny Golson, and Sahib Shihab. Four bonus tracks have been added, consisting of three tunes that complete the last session of the Bessie Smith LP (among them a version of the classic Trouble in Mind ), and an earlier reading by Dinah of Bessie Smith s 'Back Water Blues'.
