Product description
Frank Sinatra in his inimitable way does justice to two of America's iconic composers. Harold Arlen, (1905-1981), was born in Buffalo, New York State where he spent much of his boyhood playing piano in night clubs and on steamers. His first hit song was Get Happy which rose from the ashes of the 1930 Broadway flop, '9:15 Revue'. During the next thirty years he had more than twenty songs in The Top Ten. His first lyricist was Ted Koehler. Another great American popular composer was, Irving Berlin. No other songwriter has created more popular hits than the man born Israel Baline in Temun, Russia. Brought up in poverty in New York, he composed his first No. 1 hit, Alexander's Ragtime Band, in 1911, however, Irving was writing ballads as well as ragtime numbers. The sudden death of his first wife, Dorothy Goetz, in 1912 (soon after their honeymoon) made Berlin express his sorrow in the first of his unforgettable ballads, When I Lost You. Again and again, later in life, Berlin would speak his most personal thoughts in ballad form, and thus create his greatest successes.
