No one in popular music has had a recording career as long as Tony Bennett, now 89 years old, has had. Putting his first LP out in 1952 ("Because Of You") and putting his most recent one out 63 years later.
This year, Tony Bennett teamed up with jazz pianist Bill Charlap to record an album of standards penned by composer Jerome Kern. As such, Tony gives us brand new recordings of some songs we heard him sing across the years.
The album is pretty split between just piano/vocal and small jazz section+piano/vocal, but it makes for a hell of a listen. As is tradition with Tony's earlier albums with Bill Evans, he sings the main portion of the song, gives the pianist a minute or around that to play solo, the comes back in to finish out the music. The album is very relaxing and makes for a great listen.
Now, what most people are probably here to find out most is the question of the vocals of Tony at this age.
I see a lot of reviewers say: "he doesn't have it anymore" or any number of criticisms. My answer is: he's 89. Yeah he's going to sound old and no he's not going to sound the same as he did when he first recorded "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" in 1962. He's going to sound different and...well...old!
Now, to turn this around, he doesn't sound the way you'd expect him to at age 89. The album certainly has a few clunkers here and there but nothing so offensive that he should stop singing because...to be honest...he sounds DAMN good for 89.
Tony is a little raspy and his vibrato is a bit out of shape but to my ears he sounds better than anyone should possibly sound at this age, and it makes for a hell of an album. Tony has finally embraced his baritone register and spends most of the album on softer low-mid register vocalizing, with the occasional signature high note that he busts out with great voice and still with great power, and to be honest his choice of style and range for this album help make the CD as great as it is, for me personally.
The replay value of this album is excellent, in particular for me "All The Things You Are" and "The Last Time I Saw Paris". But the album is full of gems.
So if you're a true Tony Bennett enthusiast (in the sense that you actually understand the concept of aging), then you're going to adore this album to pieces. Its an excellent jazz album and another excellent addition to the discography of one of America's greatest vocalists of all time.

As others have pointed out here so accurately, Tony Bennett is a true American treasure. At age 89, he continues to be an amazing force of nature and proves once again on “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern” that he has few rivals today in the interpretation of songs from the great American songbook.
Even though Jerome Kern died at the now relatively young age of 60, he left behind a prodigious amount of material from which to choose and the selections here are wonderful. Fourteen standards written between 1914 (“They Didn’t Believe Me”) and 1945 (“Nobody Else But Me”) approximately, many of which if not all Mr. Bennett has covered previously. All arrangements here sound fresh from the opening cut, “All the Things You Are” to the closing one, “Look For the Silver Lining”. I especially like his take on “Make Believe” which is much more playful as other versions tend to be a bit overwrought.
Mr. Bennett’s vocal abilities continue to impress and I find his voice in better shape now than 20-25 years ago. Seeing him a couple of years ago in concert I was equally impressed with his ability to project his voice through the theater without benefit of a microphone and at the end of the concert, not the beginning!!!!
Not to be overlooked is the equally impressive piano playing of Bill Charlap along with the accompaniment of pianist Renee Rosnes, Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums). A class act all the way around.
After so many “duet” albums over the past 15 years, it’s nice to have Mr. Bennett soloing vocally front and center once again for the first time since 2004s “The Art of Romance” and 2008s “A Swingin’ Christmas” . Don’t misunderstand, the duets albums are wonderful, also.
This is highly recommended and kudos to all the talent involved here. Here’s to many more years of good health and quality music such as this.

Bill Charlap's playing is superb, and Tony Bennett's interpretation of these great Kern songs is quite enjoyable. Bennett's voice is not, of course, the voice of a singer in his prime anymore -- you can hear the adaptations he is needing to make to sing some of these songs. But he is still wonderful, and his love for the songs comes through in his still very good singing and thoughtful interpretations. Bottom line, I wouldn't get this one for the singing, but the singing is still good -- just not great. (If you are expecting a reprise of the sessions with Bill Evans, please remember that those occurred several decades ago now, therefore with a younger singer!) The chemistry between Bennett and Charlap is lovely, however.

My CD arrived today but I listened to the AutoRip last night because I have been a big Tony Bennett fan for years and wanted to hear this album as soon as I could! It is unequivocally a 5 Star album! The clarity and projection of Tony's voice defy his 89 years! He turned 89 on August 3rd. He gives a flawless performance that sounds like he could have recorded this album 20 years ago! Tony does not need Auto-Tune. All you need to do is to go to one of his concerts where he does the last song of the night without a microphone and projects his voice throughout a venue to verify that. Bill Charlap's piano compliments Tony's performances perfectly, as do the performances of Charlap's bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington! Even Frank Sinatra said "For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business. He excites me when I watch him. He moves me. He's the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more." Tony Bennett is a National Treasure and I look forward to each album he releases. It may surprise some that I am a first generation Beatles fan but thanks to my Dad who raised me to appreciate many different types of music, I am also a Tony Bennett fan. Thanks Dad and Thank You Mr. Anthony Dominick Benedetto (Tony's birth name). Keep doing what you're doing Tony!

Ignore the negative reviews. This is as good as it gets, classic songs beautifully recorded in 21st century tech in a way that allows you to hear Bennett's impeccable jazz timing and inventiveness (as one small example listen to I Won't Dance - as covered a song as any - and hear his subtle alterations on the repeating lyric "you know what") in an excellent small group setting. Yes his voice is slightly older, compared to ... 1965, but not in a bad way. If anything, it gives the songs more impact. We are enormously lucky that a jazz artist of Bennett's calibre is still recording, and at this level. This will not sell as many as the big ticket items with Lady Gaga etc - which are fun - but for my money this is hugely more important, and easily up there with the Bill Evans recordings of the 70s. EDIT: 2022 - So here we are, and Tony has hung up his recording boots. Well, what an innings! Just listened to Love for Sale (2022) and it's superb & not needing any apologies at all for the artist being, er, 95... But... listening to this again, it sounds, if anything, better. Just astonishing. So much subtlety and, crucially and as ever, jazz nous. His last great work on record, IHMO. This one will be remembered. It's fully up there with Ella's songbook albums etc. - a definitive record. As I said, just buy it. If you ever read this, Tony, thank you. Mr Sinatra was a good judge of musicians. Kudos to you.
