Knight Kyle and the Magic Silver Lance (Adventures Beyond Dragon Mountain) Kindle Edition

Welcome to Knight Kyle’s world!

Beyond the great forest and towering Dragon Mountain lies Fairyland, a land of elves and trolls, dragons and giants, magicians and fairies. And in one corner, Fairyland East, lives Knight Kyle.

Kyle’s great-grandfather once possessed a silver lance that, according to legend, gave its owner invincible power. The lance is now missing, and Kyle is always looking for it, but so are his worst enemies: the robber Rasputin and the evil magician Balduin.

Luckily, Kyle has the help of his friends, including Lady Constance (who is as brave as a dragon), Dragobert (who really is a dragon), Elf Aurin (whose harp playing, unfortunately, puts Kyle to sleep), and Prince Nepomuk (who protects his friends and his wardrobe at all times).

Almost every day they find themselves in a new amazing adventure…

This enchanting story by bestselling author Oliver Pötzsch is beautifully illustrated by Sibylle Hammer.

Illustrations can be viewed on certain Fire tablets and the free Kindle app for iOS and Android.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–4—A collection of adventures starring a knight and his many friends who dwell on the east side of Fairyland. Knight Kyle is the best sword fighter and bravest knight of all, on an endless quest for a lost family heirloom, the silver lance, which gives the owner invincibility (unfortunately, it's in constant danger of being found by his worst enemies!). While the tales are short and fun, this title does not benefit from an audio recording. The book starts out with the awkward introduction of characters from Fairyland. This might be useful if listeners could continually flip back for reference as these characters are being introduced, but it doesn't quite work here. The narrator's delivery is almost too serious for the fanciful tone of the work. Music is played throughout the production, and although at times it adds to the ambience, mostly it just distracts from the story. VERDICT This might be a case where the novel does not translate well into audio. Skip this one, and perhaps purchase the original format.—Mariela Siegert, Westfield Middle School, Bloomingdale,IL

From the Publisher

After becoming a father, bestselling medieval thriller writer Oliver Pötzsch was inspired by his favorite part of parenthood: telling bedtime stories to his children. Encouraged by the look of wonder in his kids’ eyes, he invented far-off lands peopled with knights and ladies, threatened by invading hordes, and protected by fortresses and moats.

The result is
Knight Kyle and the Magic Silver Lance, Oliver’s first book for children, and there’s something for everyone in this world of dragons and trolls, lances and armories. The whimsical language glints like the sunlight off Knight Kyle’s sword, with Sibylle Hammer’s vibrant illustrations bringing the action into full color. Readers will see themselves in the story, much as we all find ourselves in classics like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. My favorite is Constance, the lady of the castle, who is always reading books at the top of her tower. This princess does more than just wait for her suitor to return from battle: she learned something from all those books—like how to get rid of chocolate-loving trolls!

So tonight before bedtime, I invite you and your family to experience this magical escape, beyond the great forest, over towering Dragon Mountain, to Fairyland East, land of raspberry soda and infinite possibilities.

Usually when I am picking out my Kindle First selection each month, I lean towards anything in the romance, historical fiction, and fiction genres since that's what I know and like. This month, however, I opted to read Oliver Potzsch's first children's book, Knight Kyle and the Magic Silver Lance because a) why not and b) I have twin toddlers and, even though they aren't anywhere near being able to read chapter books, I still like to know what's out there when that time comes. Several years ago, I read Oliver Potzsch's The Hangman's Daughter and enjoyed it which is another reason I decided to read this book.

Knight Kyle lives in Fairyland East and is on a mission to find a magical silver lance which has belonged to his family for a long time. The lance has been missing for awhile and it's important that Kyle finds it since the person who holds it is invincible and he must keep it away from the robber Rasputin and the evil magician Balduin. While on this mission, Kyle also has a lot of other adventures like getting back Fairy Laureana's book of spells from Rasputin, helping a dragon with a toothache, and saving Lady Constance from a family of trolls.

This book is considered a children's chapter book and contains 13 stories about Knight Kyle's adventures as well as brief summaries for each character at the beginning of the book. This book was originally written in German, translated well by Lee Chadeayne and illustrated beautifully by Sibylle Hammer. I'd consider this book to be in the fantasy genre for children because of the dragon, trolls, and fairies and I enjoyed the adventures in this book. I normally don't read a lot of fantasy books (you never know, that could change) but I'm glad I read this one because I think it's great especially for children who enjoy reading about fantasy adventures. I don't know many of the books out nowadays for kids who are reading but I would guess this book would be good for ages six and older. I'm a very cautious mom and this is a book I would feel comfortable allowing my kids to read when the time comes.

Because this book contains a lot of beautiful illustrations, I feel it is best to read it on a tablet or smartphone if you can. I read it on my Kindle Paperwhite and the illustrations are all black and white and sometimes hard to see without the colors. It's doable but not optimal. I experimented and looked at it with the Amazon Kindle app on my smartphone and it actually looks much better. The illustrations are small but colorful and vibrant and the text is still easy to read so you could always read this book on your phone if you choose to do so.

Overall, I think this book is very well written and I think it's a great one for children. It's not normally the type of book I would read but I read this book with my kids in mind and hope that Oliver Potzsch writes more of these books because I would love for my kids to read these in just a few years! If you are looking for some light fantasy adventures for yourself or a child, this book is a good choice and I highly recommend it.

"REMAIN CHILDLIKE, AS LONG AS YOU LIVE!" That's the author's wish for you. And these stories and illustrations may help you do that as they did for me.

This is my kind of book--beautiful illustrations, short stories, a bunch of heroes and friends, plus two "sweet" ladies. Oh, and two very villainy villains with their dragon and magic who aren't all bad and just need a little love. They all live in Fairyland. That means a traditional setting for a fairy tale world, one I could just jump into and not get puzzled or frazzled. Even though the 13 stories are separate, they all build up to the central quest--Knight Kyle's hunt for his great-grandfather's silver lance.

That lance has great power. With it a hero or a villain could control the world, even the moon and sun. But don't take that threat too seriously, for the author doesn't. These stories are fun--no big fights, unless you count a tournament of knights using rubber-tipped lances and wooden swords as serous. And the top prize is a soccer-sized chocolate egg. Oh yes, this book is also about Knight Kyle's favorite food--chocolate!

These stories remind me much of the famous 19th century fairy tales by George MacDonald, more relaxing than those of J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis. This book relaxed me, and I'm sure it'll be great to read to children of all ages, although for younger listeners you'll need to break up a few of the longer chapters.

Three creative people with much entertainment experience put together this winning book. The author worked many years with Bavarian Broadcasting and has international fame with his novels. The translator, Lee Chadeayne is also renowned, a Life Member of the American Literary Translators Assn. The artist, Sibylle Hammer, from childhood has followed her passion for drawing and painting, and now writes and designs children's books for many publishers. Together, they have created a whimsical, humorous, beautiful work that I will enjoy sharing with all the children in my circle.

This is my Kindle First selection for November, a gratifying reward for being a paid member! I highly recommend it for children of all ages, even for those in their 70s like me!

This is one of the most beautifully designed and illustrated Kindle books I've seen. The stories are a bit simple and cliched, but will be instantly enjoyed by children and the visually stunning layout and colourful imagery will appeal to all. It is recommended that you read on the iPhone or iPad app rather than a Kindle itself to fully enjoy the impact of the colour designs and drawings.
