      Critics Consensus

It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island's gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.

Shaun E Take 2 at this review. Shutter Island takes quite a turn from what you expect at the beginning of the film that its stark ending precludes a second watch except for analysis purposes. Dramatic, stark and often disturbing, the film's soundtrack adds to the drama of the piece. Not perfect - once you know the ending, there are some things that do not truly add up, but are not so far fetched as to still be within the bounds of plausibility. Well filmed, this drama certainly plays with your mind and you really cannot work out what is going on for most of the movie. Slightly long with numerous dream sequences, the film does mostly hold up to its running time. Well worth a watch, if only once. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Charlie W I think this movie deserves may more respect and a much higher rating. The plot twist was so unexpected and absolutely amazing, and written perfectly. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Ryan B Watching this movie almost makes you feel like you're an inmate in the asylum. A movie that everyone must watch at least once. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review MDJ 2 Amazing performance and the blow twist was great, it is a master piece Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Anthony W Solid bit of horror, with a truly awful twist at the end. I shudder just to think of it. I suppose if I liked horror as a genre I would give it another star on top - but I don't. Julie and Brandy Autostraddle It's supposed to be some suspense thriller... somebody should have said hey why don't you go see the hilarious comedy of Shutter Island. Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator It's not a serious film and it's not even an especially suspenseful film but it is fun, in a Dr Caligari sort of way. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online A twisted psychological thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end, Shutter Island is yet another fantastic collaboration between DiCaprio (giving another pitch-perfect and near heartbreaking performance) and director Martin Scorsese. Rated: A Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia As a mystery thriller, it is a direct one-way ticket to madness, and it's impossible not to get hooked or think about it once it's over. Without a doubt, this is one of Scorsese's best films with DiCaprio. What is the cost to oneself of living by a system of belief? Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Scorsese has conjured up a nightmarish cinematic display of his talents, quite unlike anything he’s shown us before.
