This is a bit of silly old (but not ancient)school juvenile humor, with sight gags and numerous one-liners all strung together with some fluff to make it an actual plot, if barely so. If you're not into movies like that, you're probably too old to enjoy this one too. If you enjoyed the original series, you probably won't like this at all. It's not the same. First thing is, it's in color. Yeah, I know...why would they ruin such a great old classic by adding color, right? And where's Phil Silvers? Well, he's a little old to be playing a Sergeant in the army.
Well, this isn't your grandpa's Sgt. Bilko. And it's not the 50's anymore. This is a movie made based upon the character of Bilko, and then slightly re-imagined, though it's as off-beat as what I've seen of Phil Silvers' show. It's silly and it's pointless and strictly for entertainment. And there's nothing wrong with that if it's funny. And I think this movie is just that. It's great escapism and I recommend it for anyone with a sense of humor. If you didn't like it, you probably don't have one.

What can I say? I grew up watching a TV sitcom called, "The Phil Silver Show"! I used to roll with laughter at his antics. No doubt about it, Steve Martin has out done Phil Silvers! Pay attention to the beginning and you have to be quick to catch on to what ALL is going on!
It is one movie that I can look at over again and laugh at the same lines and scenes!
It does not have any violence whatsoever, nor does it have vile language and sex. It does have a lot of gambling scenes since that is what the Sgt. and his platoon do all the day long! They have a racket going but it is one funny show! Buy it and put it on for some good belly laughs!

Being a long-time fan of Steve Martin, I found this movie to be an exceptional, rolling on the floor comedy! I first watched it when I was in the military and couldn't deny the similarities between the movie's characters and my experiences with those I served with and under. This is Steve Martin at his very best and it's unfortunate that he hasn't replicated his hilarious performance 'post' Bilko. You don't have to have been in the service to enjoy this movie, but for those who have worn the uniform you won't be able NOT to laugh your behind off.
The TV series was also pretty dang funny for those who remember it. Perhaps the series will make it to DVD, but I doubt it. The studio responsible for this TV show should have packaged it in line with the movie like what was done with "Get Smart". We can always hope can't we?
