It is hard to immagine that a book about a failed terroristic attack can be funny at all. Who chooses such a topic? Boris Johnson did and has written a book with plots and lots of sub-plots, wickedly funny but also intelligent, hardly ever politically correct, never boring. Johnson holds together this complex story without any effort.
On first glimpse it is an over the top funny book, but there is a second layer in which Johnson portrays human nature. In this book we meet them all: the good people, the ruthless, the greedy, the hypocrites, the pompous, the opportunists, the timid, the believers, the patriots, the zealots and their dumb or misguided followers. All of them (even the smallest side characters) spring into life and romp through the pages.
If you like the books written by Tom Sharpe, and are not afraid of the politically incorrect, you'll love this one too.
No one can excuse away a book like this as ‘just a bit of fun’ It didn’t make me laugh, it made me sad and angry.
