2 Staying Together (1989)

Staing Together cast
Hemdale Film Corporation

Even though this movie is not the most known among Sean Astin's movies, Staying Together is a funny movie, in its own unique way. It's a comedy-drama movie that was released in 1989 and directed by Lee Grant. It is similar in theme and in many other areas to Succession. Staying Together, too, is about three siblings who spend most of their lives relying on their father's growing business (a family restaurant) as a guarantee for their future. They took it as a fact that they will one day inherit the business from their father. Sean played the role of the youngest brother who is even more clueless about life than his two brothers. On a whim, their father decides to sell the restaurant and just like that, all future guarantees evaporated.

The movie is about how these three brothers navigate through life's ups and downs and discover what it really means to be independent and self-reliant. Sean's character is called Duncan McDermott, the most fun, outgoing, and probably most reckless of them all. He's the sensational teenager who looks for his professional, romantic, and sexual identity while trying to live up to his father's expectations and make him proud. The movie would not have been the same if it wasn't for Sean's onscreen charisma and his absolutely magnificent acting skills.

1 Like Father, Like Son (1987)

Like Father Like Son cast
Tri-Star Pictures

Is another fantasy comedy film starring Sean Astin that is an absolute must-see. Its plot is original and absolutely entertaining, while at the same time targeting serious themes. Like Father, Like Son is about a very successful and driven surgeon called Jack who is so absorbed by his own work that he ignored the problems of his son Chris who goes to high school.

One day, Clarence (Sean Astin) who is Chris's friend invents a formula that caused the father and his son to switch minds. This takes us a few years forward to 2009 when the movie 17 Again, which handles pretty much the same theme, was released. One day, out of the blue, Jack was taken back to the old times of high school, remembering how hard it was for some teenagers, and Chris took a closer look at his father's adult life. While Sean Astin did not have the leading role in this movie, his performance gave the movie an even more comedic aspect and a lighter mood. He is definitely the secret ingredient in every movie that he stars.
