Mr. Saunders's Rust Belt magic realism doesn't carry the same force onscreen, at least in this initial half-hour.

So it feels like we're in the world of indieland quirk - Napoleon Dynamite but also sad sometimes - and it doesn't help that everyone seems to be doing their broadest "working class" accent. There's a big twist in Sea Oak, though.

Just as you begin thinking the show is finding its proper balance, it's over - but it leaves you wanting to see another episode, to find out more about what this peculiar family will do next.
