Highlights

  • Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott for Scream 7, placing her as the main focus for the first time since Scream 4.
  • Sidney, branded 'The Angel of Death' in Scream 4, could face community hatred in Scream 7, expanding this plot point.
  • Scream 7 might explore how townsfolk blame Sidney for previous tragedies, with a potential storyline connecting Ghostface's motive to her past.

Neve Campbell is set to return as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7, and she will be the focus of the upcoming sequel, directed by original creator, Kevin Williamson. It'll be the first time Sidney is the main character since Scream 4 in 2011, directed by the late Wes Craven. Campbell reprized the role in Scream (2022) but she was very much a supporting character, with Sam Carpenter becoming the main target for Ghostface. Scream 7 should expand a plot point from Scream 4 that hinted at Sidney being hated by her local community and branded 'The Angel of Death.'

Scream 7 has been hit by a lot of controversy ever since it was announced by Spyglass. Melissa Barrera was fired, and Jenna Ortega left the project due to scheduling issues, and this was followed by Christopher Landon's exit as director. But things appear to be back on track ever since Neve Campbell signed on, with filming due to take place sometime this year, with Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey rumored to return to the franchise.

Sidney Prescott has been stalked by psycho killers brandishing the iconic Ghostface mask for nearly thirty years now, and has survived every single time. In Scream 4, Sidney returns to her hometown of Woodsboro for the first time since the events of the first movie. But rather than being welcomed back with open arms, she was treated like a curse on the small town.

Sidney arrived in Woosboro on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the original Ghostface killings, to promote her new book, Out of Darkness, which was all about her bravery and survival. However, when the murders start up again, the town is less than welcoming, and they consider her a bad omen. This is evident in the aftermath of Olivia Morris' brutal murder, where you can hear the locals shouting abuse at Sidney as she emerges from the crime scene.

Scream 7 should do things differently than David Gordon Green's Halloween reboot, which featured several disappointing Laurie Strode storylines.

Ironically, it was Olivia who coined the phrase 'The Angel of Death' when referring to Sidney's return to Woodsboro. However, Sidney being hated by the town of Woodsboro was a plot point that didn't go much further than this, but it's one that could be resurrected in Scream 7, and form a vital aspect to the Sidney Prescott story.

What implications could the expansion of this plot point have for Sidney in Scream 7?

It's a mystery why so many people have wanted Sidney Prescott dead over the years, but she keeps on surviving every different iteration of Ghostface, and after seemingly finding her happy ending after her absence in Scream 6, Sidney is coming back once again to face off with Ghostface in Scream 7.

Scream 4 hinted at Sidney being hated by people because death seems to follow her wherever she goes, but Scream 7 needs to go full on with this particular plot point and portray Sidney as the ultimate pariah in her community. It hasn't been confirmed where Scream 7 will be set, but it's unlikely it'll take place in Woodsboro, with Sidney vowing never to return. Having said that, she did return in Scream (2022) but it took Dewey's major character death to coax her back and seek revenge.

It is likely that wherever Scream 7's Sidney story takes place, the town folk will know about her past, and when the murders inevitably start up again, Sidney could be the target of vile vitriol from the residents, who are less than happy that her presence has led to another murder spree. Scream 4 merely hinted at people's dislike for Sidney, but Scream 7 has the opportunity to fully embrace this plot point and delve into the trauma faced by Sidney from not only being targeted by numerous killers, but the abuse she has suffered from mean-spirited people who blame her for the deaths of so many victims.

'The Angel of Death' moniker that was given to Sidney in Scream 4 could return, and even lead to the locals thinking Sidney has finally snapped and become the Ghostface killer. Of course, Sidney is highly unlikely to be the killer as that would ruin her story and spell the end of the franchise once and for all, but it might be interesting to see how Sidney deals with the allegations.

Scream 7 has the opportunity to fully delve into the trauma faced by Sidney!

The motive of the upcoming Ghostface could also be linked to the theory that Sidney is somehow responsible for all the death that has surrounded her all these years, and the killer has some twisted logic for killing Sidney, figuring that this will end the Ghostface killings forever. Plot details remain surrounded in mystery, but more information is likely to come out about Scream 7 as filming gets underway later this year, with a potential release date in 2025.
