About
The SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT is one of most important exhibition venues in Europe. Since opening in 1986, it has presented more than 240 exhibitions on around 2,000 m² of floor space and can boast a total of more than 8.8 million visitors. The SCHIRN focuses on art-historical and historico-cultural themes, discourses, and trends from a contemporary perspective. Its range of offers is multifaceted, international, and progressive; it attempts to open up new points of view and to break open traditional patterns of reception. The exhibitions are devoted in equal measure to contemporary stances in art and art of the modern era.

I visited two exhibitions here in the past few weeks, René Magritte and Peter Saul. Both highly enjoyable in a very quiet, still, peaceful and sizeable space, very low pressure and limitless time to absorb and enjoy. Check what's currently showing carefully though because banners may still be outside for a while after specific exhibitions are already over. Would return without hesitation.

I recently visited their "Colour Woodcut Vienna 1900" exhibition. As an Art Dealer and 30 year veteran of art exhibitions world-wide, I have to say that the little Schirn could teach many major art museums a lesson or three. The works were curated with precision and care - a really generous showing given the small time period covered and, they admit, the relative obscurity of this art form. Tempting to pad this type of collection, but each work was significant and added to a deeper understanding of the genre and era. Just the right amount of collateral material to flesh out the story and lovely examples of thematic projects and series. The written presentation was informative and straight forward - none of the tiring pretentiousness or disturbing 'art-speak' so often seen in major museums. And the catalogue was simply spectacular - almost 1.5 inches thick, nearly 10 lbs. heavy and only 35 Euros - it covered the entire exhibition in wonderful detail. Special mention must go to the lighting - high up in the ceiling rafters but perfectly focused to bathe each picture with just the right amount of sparkle. Hats off Schirn - you really have put on a first class show!

I happened upon this art museum while leaving the Dom/Römer U-Bahn stop, and I'm glad I did. What caught my attention was the "Sturm-Frauen" exhibition (Storm Women: Women artists of the Avant-Garde in Berlin 1910-1930).

This wonderful exhibition featured over 275 works by female artists. Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Contructivism were all represented. While the majority of the work were paintings, there was also some very Avant-Garde costume designs. This exhibit pays a great tribute to a group of artists that probably didn't get a lot of recognition. There's a wealth of exciting work to be seen. The exhibition seemed to be popular judging by the crowd.

There were two exhibitions going on at the Schirn, I chose only to see this one. The museum's location is near Frankfurt's wonderful Christmas market.

Highly recommended!

The Schirn Kunsthalle has an ever changing display of artwork that you would have to do a lot of traveling to see in its natural habitat and since many pieces are on loan from private collections that may not be possible. Anyway, every single exhibit I've been to has blown me away.

A word of advice ... don't go opening day or the last weekend before a display closes since it is mindbogglingly difficult to see anything, breathe or move!!! If you can, go on a weekday or an odd weekend.

Oh, and rainy days are a tiny bit crowded as well.

We visited an excellent exhibition of pairings by Lee Krasner , the wife of Jackson Pollock. The paintings were in chronological order retracing her history and the development of her art. Highly recommended. At the same time there was the tapestries of Hannah Ryggen which was interesting and colourful. Recommended.
The museum is modern and functional and I will return after February 13th to see the Freda Kahlo exhibition.

This is claymation at its raw fantastical surrealistic best. Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg have created a world of raw fantasy and perversion using claymation as an elevated art form. Grotesque people, animals dressed as humans, vegetables and cheese are the actors in this erotic and violent underworld. The thoughts that many people have but even fewer ever act out. Thumping rhythmic trancelike music often accompanies the videos that are mostly displayed in this large oversized space that the viewer is totally enveloped in. And then there is the incredible bird aviary of sculpted birds. This art exhibition may not be to suitable to everyone’s taste but it is a breathtaking and brilliant world that Nathalie and Berg have created.

When we visited the Schirn, the two exhibits were on the colonial African-animal painter Wilhelm Kuhnert and a collection of art approaching the concept of "wilderness". We went here after the MMK, which had been opaque and context-less, and though the Schirn's two exhibits were very different (one internally cohesive, one more of an anthology), both were very well thought through and reflective.

For the exhibit on Kuhnert, the curators acknowledged how German colonial power affected the area at the time, how the art mischaracterized Africa and animal life in the interest of European views and norms, and how Kuhnert lived and worked (e.g. illustrating candy bar collectable cards to make money, killing the animals he loved for the thrill and to get a closer view of them). Great from both the broad view of German colonialism and the very human one of a specific man who, like most of us, was neither angel nor devil. And lovely paintings besides.

For the second, curators took a smart approach to what societies and artists have seen as "wilderness": Beautiful landscapes we aspire to visiting, frightening and distant savagery, the subconscious and wild parts of ourselves, the digital future, a changing climate. Creative, with good contextualizing.

Obviously this will all be different for other exhibits, but the curation seems so thoughtful that I'd be happy to visit again to see what else they come up with.

Schirn Kunsthalle is strategically located near the Romerberg off to the east side. The building itself is not notable, but the Basquiat exhibition was a chance to know the artist's life with film, photos, drawings, paintings, and objects. Buy your ticket online for 12 Euro to skip the line, if any. Note that you will have to check all bags including purses.

I saw a decent exhibition on art in the Weimar Republic. It was crowded though so lots of human Tetris familiar to London commuters. There was a multimedia guide but inexcusably it was only in German. Very disappointed.
