About
The SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT is one of most important exhibition venues in Europe. Since opening in 1986, it has presented more than 240 exhibitions on around 2,000 m² of floor space and can boast a total of more than 8.8 million visitors. The SCHIRN focuses on art-historical and historico-cultural themes, discourses, and trends from a contemporary perspective. Its range of offers is multifaceted, international, and progressive; it attempts to open up new points of view and to break open traditional patterns of reception. The exhibitions are devoted in equal measure to contemporary stances in art and art of the modern era.

Not worth the money for me. Poor signage so you’re not even sure where to go. Security person following you around a lot. 2 small exhibitions only to see.

Schirn presents great stuff but the museum itself is no fun at all. It’s like they don’t really want you to be there. They have a little table for a museum shop and closed it 5 hours before the museum closes. The staff for the most part are unfriendly. Traffic is poorly organised. I hate going there but tolerate it to see the art. Talk about besucherunfreundlich!

Used to be, these halls were a total gesamtkunstwerk. Now the only artists here are con artists. Looks like they tried to put the least amount of effort into the place and still claim there is something happening here. (There's nothing happening here.)
Currently, one gallery has a pair of videos with actors dressed as police slowly crawling on a sidewalk. The other gallery? Well if you look at the pictures I so kindly attached, you'll have no reason to visit. Yes- that's all there is to it.
Oh yes, someone painted a dead tree white and left it in the foyer.
What an insult to art, Frankfurt, and humanity.

When in Frankfurt, art gallery lovers cannot miss at least two places: Schirn and Städel. So if you are an art gallery lover do not miss this one!

Space is nothing special, so whether or not you visit depends on the exhibition. Also, it must be the only museum in the Western world without a gift shop.

I enjoyed the "Kunst für Keinen (1933-1945)" exhibit and had hoped to buy the accompanying book - which was for sale at the ticket counter - but was surprised to find it was of very poor quality. Bad paper, bad reproduction, bad binding. It reminded me a bit of the shabby books I used to see in the DDR, the former East Germany.

The exhibit itself was excellent, both the curation and the setup.

Exhibition Kunst für Keinen (1933-1945)
With Hitler came to power in Germany by nazis in 1933, many artists became unwanted and their art was seen by the regime as degenerate (“Entartet”). Several artists fled to other countries, some even committed suicide. Other artists had to work in secret, for fear of presecution. Some were completely banned from making and exhibiting art. Others could become member of the State Chamber of Culture (Reichskammer für Kultur), but still had to maintain low profile. Work and life of fourteen artists who remained (most of time) in Germany and who went into “inner immigration” is shown in the exhibition “Art for No One”. There is a fabulous series of etchings by Lea Grundig and Hans Grundig. There is most impressive work by Werner Heldt (see “Meeting, Aufmarsch der Nullen”ca 1934). The enigmatic work by Franz Radziwill is worth examination: He became member of SDAP (left wing), but his work was still considered as "entartet". There are several interesting collages and paintings by Hanna Hoch. The abstract paintings by Jeanne Mammen are most remarkable. See “Burning House”. Some very nice abstract geometric paintings by Fritz Winter, who was at the Eastern Front as soldier, and who was caught by Russian armee and held till 1949. During war and imprisonment, Winter made very small drawings, of which the series shown are noteworthy. Exhibition runs till June 6th 2022.

Magnetic North and Gilbert & George are the current exhibitions at Schirn...while the first was nice and and very aesthetically “correct” (a little too much for my taste), the second was *SO* incorrect (politically, aesthetically, etc.)...it was just f-awesome. And the “dot on the i” was the floor walls in the inner building “cilinder” displaying the best collection of phrases using the f-word I have ever seen. Made my day...

Quite complicated to join in. It is a music hall and school. The exhibition Haerizadeh ... was not my cup of tea.

We went in to see both exhibitions in there. They both were very interesting.
Just unfriendly staff at one entrance really made us embarrassing. He reacted as we didn't buy that tickets. Mild you, he was the one who failed to appear at the entrance to check them out first.
To me, that was bad!

We visited an excellent exhibition of pairings by Lee Krasner , the wife of Jackson Pollock. The paintings were in chronological order retracing her history and the development of her art. Highly recommended. At the same time there was the tapestries of Hannah Ryggen which was interesting and colourful. Recommended.
The museum is modern and functional and I will return after February 13th to see the Freda Kahlo exhibition.
