RCP responds to GMC research on migrating doctors

The RCP has responded to research by the General Medical Council on identifying groups of migrating doctors.

Responding to the research, Dr Sarah Clarke, president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), said:

“At a time when the NHS is already so overstretched, it is very concerning to hear so many doctors say they are considering moving abroad to practice medicine. It’s clear that we’re at a turning point for the medical profession, and if we’re to continue being a world leader in medical care, things need to change.

Doctors must feel professionally valued in the workplace. Staffing shortages are the biggest barrier to meeting demand for care and delivering healthcare sustainably in the long-term. Staffing levels impact not only patients accessing care, but their experience of care.

“Our focus has to be on creating a better, more flexible working environment for doctors and trainees at all stages of their career, giving them access to flexible working hours, affordable childcare and supporting consultants who want to return to medical practice following retirement. We also need get the basics right, including functioning IT systems, 24/7 access to hot food and drink, and dedicated rest facilities.”
