Sandro Kopp was born on the 14th of February, 1978 in Heidelberg, Germany. Raised in Newzealand and Germany, Kopp gets his artistic knowledge from his mother, Kayla, who worked as a painter in New Zealand, and his father, Hermann Kopp, who worked in construction.

Kopp took up the mantle of his mother and was inspired by her art. But despite the artistic background in his family, it was not his mother who discovered Kopp’s knack for art. 

“My art teacher put on a solo exhibition of my work when I was 14 or 15. It was amazing, when I think back on it. He stayed after school to help me hang it. I totally didn’t get it, I was just annoyed at having to stay behind.”

Following his high school graduation, Kopp went off for his compulsory national service and helped out at a holiday center for ADD children. At the end of his service, Kopp moved to New Zealand where he attended The Learning Connexion, an alternative art school in Wellington. While at Wellington, Kopp worked on the Lord of the Rings movies and sketched production drawings, and moon-lighted as an uncredited Elf, Orc, and Gondorian soldier. So, when the same team was taken to work on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Kopp came along for the ride. Over the years, Kopp has worked on a series of portraits primarily portraits painted from video chat conversations.
