Historical Description
SANDALMAGNA is an extensive parish, including the townships of sandal Magna, Crigglestone and Walton; part of the township of West Bretton being also included in the parish. Sandal is pleasantly situated on the south Bide of the vale of the Calder and is intersected by the turnpike roads from Wakefield to Barnsley and from Wakefield to Doncaster: it is contiguous to the borough of Wakefield, and is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, union, county court district and rural deanery of Wakefield, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The Great Northern railway has a station here, and the Barnsley canal passes through the parish. The church of St. Helen is a cruciform structure of stone, in the Norman and Gothic styles, consisting of chancel with chapel, the burial-place of the Waterton and Pilkington families, nave, aisles, transepts and a square tower with a peal of 6 bells, dating from 1812, and a clock: the church was restored in 1873 and fitted with open oak benches, a handsome reredos and a stone pulpit: the east window is stained, and the chancel floor paved with encaustic tiles: the font bears the date 1662 and on two oak stalls are carvings in wood of the Percy badge: there are monuments to William Hardcastle, gent, of Milnthorp (1693) and his son, Thomas, of Gray’s Inn (1754); William and John, sons of George Beaumont, of Chapelthorpe (1695), and Sarah (1695), Frances (1705) and Ann (1710), daughters of the same; and to John Wheelwright, late of North shields, collector of salt duties (1724). The registers date from the year 1652, and are in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £380 with a good residence, in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. Richard Norman Hurt. The school and almshouses were erected on a piece of waste ground, with a house for the master, and endowed in 1686 by Richard Taylor esq. with four houses in Westgate, Wakefield, let at £84 a year, which is appropriated partly to two alms women and partly towards the expense of educating poor children; the late Alderman Scholey left by will £10,000, half as an endowment for the school and half for the poor. £200, left by Mary Bowles for apprenticing poor children, was laid out in the purchase of a house and 22 acres of land at Crigglestone, since sold, and the amount realised invested in the Funds, producing now an income of £84 13s. 5d. a year. The charities of sandal, amounting in the aggregate to £560 yearly, have lately been incorporated, with the consent of the Charity Commissioners, in a new scheme, the trustees being the Vicar of sandal, the Vicar of Chapelthorpe, Sir L. Pilkington bart. Percy Tew esq. T. H. Holdsworth esq. W. Walker esq. and the Rev. W. T. Alderson. Here was once a formidable castle, built about the year 1320 by John Plantagenet, last Earl of Warrenne, as a seat for his mistress, Maud de Norford, lady of the unfortunate Thomas, Earl of Lancaster: it was afterwards the property of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, who fell in the battle of Wakefield, fought near this castle in the year 1460, and next became the residence of his son Richard Duke of Gloucester, afterwards Richard III.; a few ruins mark the spot on which stood this celebrated baronial mansion. Lord Conyers is lord of the manor. Sir Lionel Milborne Swinnerton Pilkington bart. of Chevet Hall, Messrs. J. & J. Charlesworth. the trustees of the late Hon. G. C. Norton and Mrs. Westerman are the chief proprietors. Kettlethorpe Hall, the residence of Edmund John Winn esq. is a stone building repaired in 1837, lying in a hollow, and within its grounds stands the old front of the chapel from Wakefield bridge, taken down in 1847. The soil is loamy; subsoil, sand on sandstone rock. The chief crops cultivated in this locality are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,617 acres of the township; rateable value £17,000; area of the entire parish 7,694 acres; the population in 1871 of the township was 2,019, of the entire parish 5,024, but has recently largely increased. The hamlets in the township of sandal Magna are Milnethorpe, Woodthorpe, Stanbridge, Pledwick and a small portion of New Miller Dam. A reading room has been erected at New Miller Dam by Miss Pilkington, in which divine service is held every Sunday afternoon.
