Time stands still in such an old church. Well worth a visit, Charlemagne was crowned in this church.

From the outside, we expected a modest cathedral. Stepping inside, magnificent! My pictures do not do it justice.

A beautiful example of the Lombard-Romanesque style, this church has its best features inside.
Not because its facade was left unfinished; au contraire it must have been stunning in its days of glory. but the bas- and high-relief carvings which adorned the front were made out of local arenaria (sandstone?); a soft stone which is easy to carve, but offers little resistance to weather and pollution. So there is little left to admire outside (beside the lines of the architecture).
Examples of what it must have been are inside, in the capitals of the crypt which are adorned with monsters and bishops and fools and all kind of strange figures.
Very quiet, cool, ideal stop during an afternoon walk through the city
I give only 3 stars because I do not believe that everything can be 'above average', and compared to other historical churches (San Teodoro, San Pietro) in Pavia this one provided less 'oomph', but what a beautiful average this is !

This church isn't as nice or new as most others in Europe, and that would be bad until you realize that Holy Roman Emperors were crowned in here. It's *that* old. Highlights include the mosaic floor by the altar.

I think this church astonished me, is so different from everything I've seen. For me was the best in Pavia, and there are other great places to visit in this city.

Basilica of San Michele Maggiore, a beautiful Romanesque church which was built in sandstone instead of the typical brick of the area. The chancel also featured a really interesting pavement mosaic representing the twelve months of the year and a labyrinth made during the 12th century.
