Neighborhood: Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.

- ACAlbuquerque, New Mexico201 contributionsGive yourself 3-4 hours for full visitThis is one of the better large institution museums I've been to that spans enough material to keep you interested. It is a mix of natural history, art, and historical. We spent around 4 hours walking through the exhibits, and could've taken longer. They do a great job featuring the Indigenous people of their specific area ( some museums just display whatever from unrelated regions) and collections that told full stories about the country's periods. Some of the rooms were hard to get to, and the signs were not completely clear, but it looks like the museum expanded on top of itself, making that part a bit hard.Hello flowerfilled, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed ROM, across all the permanent collections. We always appreciate learning which exhibitions our visitors were impressed with most and are happy to learn that you enjoyed our First People's gallery in particular. We will take your feedback regarding our signage into consideration to improve our visitor experience. To help visitors navigate their way through the museum, map guides are available on our main floor and can also be downloaded from our website. It's just jam-packed with lots to see. You really need to devote the entire day from morning to evening just to explore this museum.Hello Stormflora, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit and appreciate your review. With four floors of galleries and exhibitions on art, culture, and nature, ROM is a museum for all ages. - Czar EmmanuelManila, Philippines6,299 contributionsOne of the best museums in CanadaThe structure that houses the museum's collections may be quite controversial (as old and modern styles are combined), but the place is definitely one of the best museums in the country! It has an ample collection of both natural and man-made items dating back to the prehistoric times up to the present. There are both permanent and temporary exhibits. I particularly liked the galleries dedicated to the dawn of life and prehistory. The collection of dinosaur bones is impressive and well arranged. Visitors get a discount when they present their PRESTO card.Hello CzarEmmanuel, Thank you for visiting the museum and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We agree that ROM's architecture is iconic and we're glad that you enjoyed seeing our extensive collections of art, nature and culture in our galleries. - MomRoccoChicago, Illinois544 contributionsSo Much to See!!!We have visited ROM before and just wandered by ourselves in the museum. We were there for about 4 hours total and the exhibits we found the most interesting were those dealing with Asian arts and history, Egyptian and Roman arts and history, and also the exhibit which houses dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. It did seem to us that the information on some of the dinosaurs was out of date, especially the video clips which were done in 2007. Still an awe-inspiring museum and very much worth the time to visit.Hello MomRocco, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. - baroomMississauga, Canada2,182 contributionsAnother 3rd Tuesday night freeBack here at ROM on Tue, Dec 19, for another 3rd Tuesday Night Free event (4:30PM-8:30PM). We arrived before 5PM, Queen's Park museum entrance was locked (with a note to use main entrance) so had to go around the block to Bloor St W to get in. Futalognkosaurus area of the main lobby was quite busy. Apparently, we weren't the only ones who planned a free night at the museum. We headed straight to the elevators to get to level 3 where we had a quick look at the European period rooms and current life jacket art installation. Got a little lost when we couldn't locate some Asia exhibits we've seen last time. Encountered some closed off galleries so went back to the elevator lobby. Son volunteered to grab a map guide before we continued on. We then took a peek at Byzantium, Rome and Egypt galleries then segued to gender-neutral washrooms with multiple private stalls equipped with touchless toilet, faucet and hand dryer, still on level 3. From here, we found our way to the Rotunda where we posed for photos with the lovely mosaic dome as background. We headed to the newest permanent gallery on level 2, unveiled in Dec 2021, Dawn of Life, where we saw Fractofusus and a massive Dunkleosteus fish bronze cast. At the end of this gallery is a set of doors that open directly to where Gordo the Barosaurus is located. Of course, a visit to the Age of Dinosaurs gallery wouldn't be complete without a brief stop at the T-Rex. However, it got crowded here pretty fast so we left after a couple of obligatory photos. We only stayed an hour inside the museum so admittedly didn't see a lot. We plan to visit ROM again to explore those permanent galleries we haven't seen in years.Hello baroom, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit and with four floors of galleries and exhibitions on art, culture, and nature, ROM definitely has something for everyone. This review is for our recent visit to the Wildlife Photography Exhibit and I would give it 3.5 stars.
We have Presto cards and took advantage of the 20 % off admission for the photography exhibit and regular admission. This discount must be purchased in person and there was a bit of a line up at 10:30am at the admission purchase queue but it was not too long to get to the front of the line.
They scan your ticket once to get into the museum exhibits area.
The photography exhibit is a bit further inside the building so we walked a bit to locate it. They scan your ticket again to get into the special exhibit.
Once inside we wanted to take advantage of the free descriptive audio tour that you can find on their website. The fact that it was free is great and the 14 audio descriptions for certain photographs they selected do add to the story behind the shot.
The downside is the wifi is pretty weak since this exhibit is buried inside the building. I had to use data to finish the audio tour. In addition, some of the clips we found the audio file just cut out entirely and we had to find it again. Slightly annoying.
The great news about this exhibit are some really great breathtaking shots. If you like landscape photography those aspects are combined here with wildlife. Camera nerds will love that each photo has technical specs listed with each shot so you can see what kind of lens and camera was used.
As photography fans we spent about 2 hours at this photography exhibit. As we left early afternoon it was quite busy in the exhibit area with line ups to see each photograph.
A good afternoon visit and we were glad we went.

Great museum with variety of exhibitions. With more than 2 hours in the museum we didn’t manage to see all floors and exhibitions.
We were a bit lost in this huge area because there are numerous hallways and human history exhibitions were partly in the ground level and partly on level 3. We used a map we got at the entrance as our main tool for navigation.
Dinosaurs collection is rather good, and kids were especially excited to see it.
We visited on the third Tuesday in the month, and enter for free in the afternoon hours

Went on a sunday morning at 10:30 am. ROM opened at 10am and we had a bit of a wait in line. Went with a friend and 3 kids ages 9-11. Everyone enjoyed it! Spent about 3 1/2 hours looking around. Lots of activities for kids and volunteers to help answer questions. My daughter loved finding out new information about the honey bee from a very knowledge volunteer. I went on a tour (held every hour) while my friend took the kids to a special exhibit. I highly recommend the tour. It was 40 minutes and the guide took us to about 5 different areas of the museum (no stairs on the tour just used the elevator). Great way to see and learn about some areas you my just walk past. Tip: use your presto card for a discount on admission!

We visited the ROM in early July 2020. We felt quite safe, as they were limiting the number of visitors. They were also collecting contact info for contact tracing. Everyone had their temperatures checked and hands sanitized prior to entry. Every passageway and staircase were marked for unidirectional walking.
History truly comes alive at the ROM. The exhibits are informative and engaging. You learn a lot while having fun. We went once as a couple in July 2020 and then again with our nephew in September 2020. Our nephew thoroughly enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit while Fariaa enjoyed the gems and minerals exhibit and Safi enjoyed the mummies exhibit. There is something for everyone at the ROM.
We highly recommend visiting the Royal Ontario Museum when in Toronto. We would recommend about 4 hours to thoroughly enjoy the museum. We personally purchased a Toronto CityPass and enjoyed this along with other Toronto must sees. We made a whole day of Casa Loma and the Royal Ontario Museum.

Toronto is blessed with unbelievable museums. No other city in Canada comes close, especially supposed 'big' cities like Vancouver or Calgary. The Aga Khan, AGO, Bata Shoe, Textile Museum, Gardiner Ceramic, and the Science Centre (not really a museum but it is awesome). But the best of all is the ROM. We had not been to it for some time, so we had forgotten how incredible it was (and is). Architecturally, it is just a stunning building, inside and outside. The Crystal is stunning, even if incongruent with the rest of the building. Outside is Philosopher's Walk, Queen's Park, and the gorgeous University of Toronto Campus. Thanks to COVID 19, tickets are now timed, which might be the absolutely best thing to come out of a pandemic. Best thing ever. The partner and I shared the museum with very, very few people. It was such a joy to be able to read, reflect, and observe in peace. There are no services available, but who cares? There are modern bathrooms, and plenty of sanitizer, and your wrist band allows you to re-enter, so it is a quick walk to Bloor Street for victuals. The hands-on activities are not available, so children are out of luck. And do we really need children under 6 at this kind of museum? No. Parents, bring your children when they are of an age when they can enjoy a visit, and have the social skills to match. Don't spoil our visit. There are far too many highlights to mention. The China and Korea exhibits/artifacts are stunning. The Teck Suite of Galleries (crystals, mining, minerals), and Samuel European Galleries were also fantastic. Finally, the First Peoples art and culture and Schad Gallery of Biodiversity, should also not be missed. The only negative? Too much to see in one visit!!! Four hours in, we were wiped out, but we did return for another hour at the end of the day. Even with sore feet and backs, we cannot wait to go back. What a great attraction in a world-class city.

Took my 17-year old son here. Had a good time checking out everything - he especially like the dinosaurs and that's where we spent a lot of time. Other exhibits were nice, and very similar to what you would expect at a history museum. Had a snack in the cafe. Food was not good and was horribly expensive, but from what I could tell, they do let you bring your own snacks.

The Bloodsuckers exhibition was interesting and well put together. However, we did not consider it outstanding nor one of the best special exhibits the ROM has done over the years. I would give it s 3 out of 5. Conversely, the Wildlife exhibit was exceptional as usual. Definitely a 5 out of 5. Year after year this annual exhibit always impresses. Definitely make time to visit for this one exhibit alone. I also want to point out the ROM runs free tours throughout the day. We always try to join one since they are typically excellent. This time we took one on Greece and it was fascinating.

Wow what an amazing place. We could not even see half the exhibits in the time was had but we really enjoyed what we could fit in. I found the organization a bit confusing though and had to consult the map a bunch of times to find the stuff we wanted. The cafe had a nice variety of options and I was even able to find something to fit my keto diet.

We went on a Friday afternoon to see the annual winners of the Wildlife Photography competition. The exhibition is excellent, but it was extremely crowded. I can't imagine what it would have been like on the weekend.
I think that the museum is trying to reach a school audience with their exhibitions in the basement. This time it was all about bloodsuckers, both real and imaged like Dracula. Before that it was all about spiders.
Like I said, something for everyone.

We visited the ROM one day last week, we spent about 6 hours and didn’t see it all. We enjoyed floors 1,2,3. They had the bloodsuckers exhibit and it was interesting but maybe not worth the extra$10. The regular exhibits are very good and worth seeing.

We are planning on visiting at the end of May.
It looks like they want you to pre book time slots for the special exhibits and I’m trying to plan how
The wildlife photographer is on level 3 centreblock
The Great Whales exhibit is on level B2,Garfield Weston Hall
What would be the best plan for 2 adults and 3 teens?
Main Entrance and do the main level first?
Or should I book the time slots for our arrival time, then go back and look at everything else
Is anyone experienced with the layout and know how long the main level takes?
It adds so much more pressure to book two time slots when they are not close together and I don’t know how long each one will take
Please help, I’d really appreciate it!

It all depends on your abilities.
Although I think you will be able to see everything. It is important for you to understand what is most interesting for you, plan your visit accordingly, and visit the other halls the rest of the time. Good luck.
