      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Rough Night's gifted stars are certainly good for some laughs, but their talents aren't properly utilized in a scattered comedy that suffers from too many missed opportunities.

Robert R A middling "Hangover" clone, packed to the brim with bona fide stars who are undeniably talented in their own right, sure. When grouped together, though, there's really not much of a multiplicative effect in terms of the entertainment value. "Rough Night" takes an all-too-familiar premise, bolts on a series of plot contrivances and conveniences in order to make it roll downhill, but make no mistake here, this thing has no engine. None of the character development that's attempted here feels authentic or genuine. All the time used on the dopey b-story with the fiancé could have been used to develop these characters and the circumstances at hand to a much more satisfying degree. The resolution is almost impressively tacked on and rushed. Even, the eventual plot revelations feel almost randomly dropped into the situation at hand. I kind of figured this one would come across as a misfire, but what shocked me most was how close it came to actually being pretty okay. Not close enough, sad to say. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review RetroCausAl c it was so stupidly lame bad and forced that i actually took the time to go thru the entire process needed to log in here and write this. do not waste a second of your life on this junk. completely humorless and just lame lame lame. i don't have the vocab to express how annoyed it got me with its pathetic attempt to be funny. not a single second of life is worth wasted on this. do not watch. #ifIcouldturnbacktime Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Jeff M Ouch! I didn't laugh once - not one single time. I'm not sure I even smiled. This is a sub-par SNL sketch drawn out over 100 painstaking minutes. When Kate McKinnon isn't even able to elicit a smirk or chuckle, I know we're in serious trouble. I like Scarlett Johansson as an actress, but she seems so uncomfortable in this territory. I felt badly for everyone involved. ROUGH NIGHT was just that! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Andressa F Cool plot for a light funny movie. Kinda predictable at times, but makes you keep watching to find out how the "big thing" gets resolved. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Alec B It has moments that work really well (every scene with the wine tasting bachelor party is hysterical) but it feels kind of lifeless on the whole. Like they knew the beats that a successful version of this movie should have but didn't know how to execute them with any stakes or real surprises. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Kevin M It's not bad comedy movie overall, just the plot is very typical and kinda stupid sometimes. Not bad popcorn movie tho. Lisa M. O'Neill Bitch Media Dazzled by the lineup, including comedic wunderkinds Kate McKinnon and Ilana Glazer, I assumed there would be some crudeness, vulgarity, and racy humor, but I left the movie feeling demoralized and deeply angry. Feb 27, 2021 Full Review Karen Han Slashfilm While there are parts of Rough Night that stand out for hitting the rough patches of friendship on the nose, there's not enough in between them to quite hold it all together. Rated: 5/10 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Rough Night draws inspiration from The Hangover, Bachelorette and Very Bad Things, but fails to find the humor or characterization from any of those films.
