Students can work toward this goal by participating in the Mansfield Institute for Social Justice and Transformation (MISJT), which connects students with social justice leaders at the community and national levels and offers programming, such as a rally to promote reforming Illinois’ criminal justice system.


Students can also get involved in more than 20 organizations, broadcast themselves on the school radio station, run for student government, or write for The Torch newspaper. Student athletes can play at the intramural level or try out for the Roosevelt Lakers varsity teams, which compete in the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Famous children’s book author and poet Shel Silverstein, who wrote The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends, attended the university until he was drafted into the army, and McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner graduated from Roosevelt.
