admitted to the Inner Temple 1656;  Member of Parliament for Windsor 1660-61;  in or before 1661 his wife deserted him and became the mistress of King Charles II, by whom she had several children; was committed to the Old Bailey with other "Popish Lords" 1678, released on bail 1678/9, re-committed 1679 and tried and acquitted 1680 for his supposed part in the plot fabricated by Rev Titus Oates;  sent on an Embassy to Constantinople and to Rome;  Privy Councillor 1687;  excepted from the Act of Indemnity 1690

On the death of the 1st Earl of Castlemaine both his peerage titles became extinct.
