Hal is a 15-year-old high-school student with a minor yet socially alienating (and painful) disability: he stutters uncontrollably. Determined to work through the problem, Hal opts for an extreme route – he joins the school debating team, which sends him on a headfirst plunge into breakneck speech competitions and offers a much-needed boost toward correcting the problem.

Rocket Science is a hidden gem. It has interesting characters, a great score and a nice story. It features Anna Kendrick and a Jonah Hill cameo. It draws comparisons to Rushmore, a Wes Anderson movie. However, I think this is a better movie than Rushmore. Definitely check this out.
i love how jonah hill randomly shows up in every movie from like 2005-2011 & no one ever questions it bc he just looks like he belongs there
This is probably the most underrated film I know.
It's not afraid to go its own way throughout the whole thing and I absolutely love it for that.
In a world post-Rushmore there's that inevitability where any school-set coming of age film earns immediate comparisons to Anderson's. This does more than enough to stand out from the shadow of that comedy giant and establish its own identity as a memorable take on how it feels to be young and frustrated with the complexities of the world around. It takes a while to get into its stride, but once it hits the right pace it never once falters and the laughs come quick and smart. Eventually all of this would pass, and the memory of it would give way to embellishment and fantasy and outright distorsion, until it was hard for Hal Hefner to remember what he was really like back then, when he still carried the sound of a made up, perfect voice.
Rocket Science charm lies on its heartfelt story and message, that although not exactly surprising or original, it's always managed with honesty and simplicity. A simplicty much appreciated especially in the handling of the protagonist stutter. No gimmicks. Just pure teenage angst and frustration.
A great coming of age that really makes you remember how awful being that age can be (... or feel) Very glad I found it.

Coming-of-age movie about a boy with a speech impediment who joins the school debate team. Nowhere near as clichéd or saccharine as I’d feared; I really liked this. Not only does it contain a lot of great witty movie dialogue - the sort of perfectly-formed sentences with sharp edges and perfect intonation that we all wish we could conjure up extemporaneously - but it’s also structurally a little surprising. The reasons for an odd twist halfway through are never explained to total satisfaction, but it does mean the movie heads in a different direction than most will expect. And the direction and performances do a great job capturing the feeling of shame that Hal feels when he tries to speak.…
