Who would be abetted cast for Sirius Black?

Discussion

Update: A BETTER CAST

Don’t take me wrong! I love Garry oldman, but I always pictures Sirius differently. In my head he has the looks close to Ian Somerhaulder. So whom would you cast to play Sirius

Someone younger, he was 46 when the Marauders would have been in their early to mid 30's.

Agree! It always blows my mind that they casted much older people for the roles of younger

u/deeohdeegeeee avatar

Someone (director?) said this was because they didn’t want “the adults” to look the same ages as “the kids,” otherwise it would be harder to see them as parents/uncles/etc. ie if in book 7 Harry walked into the forest with his parents guiding him, but his parents looked like his peers and not adult guardians.

Yeah, easy to gloss over that the Potters had Harry at 20 and died at 21. I think it started with Alan Rickman being cast as Snape, who was 55 by the time Philospher's Stone came out. The movies cut a lot of the Snape/Sirius rivalry apart from the Shrieking Shack scene, however they couldn't say "James Lily Sirus and Severus were schoolmates" and then have Severus be 20+ years older than everybody else.

Honestly I think that would have made it more impactful. Seeing his parents only a few years older then himself would really drive home how young they were and emphasize how tragic their deaths were.

That makes sense. After all, there are plenty of people who never read the HP series and wouldn’t think of details like that

But that‘s what makes is so much worse, they were so young when they died and hot caught in a war

u/SmachMyBichUp avatar

That was what was meant to have impact though, that they were barely out of their teen years themselves and were tragically killed.

They 100% wanted Alan Rickman for Snape, and who can argue with that. Since Snape, James, Lily. Sirius, Remus, and Lupin were all the same age they had to agr up the others. There was still a significant age difference, but it wasn't as glaring as it would have been if the Marauders were cast by actors who were the right age.

Does it make that much of a difference?

Yup. So the point of how gruesome the war was to show how young people died. James and Lily were 21 years old only when they died. Yet when they're showed in the movies, they look much older, in their 40s. Every time Harry sees their ghosts, they look old. It shatters the point that they never got to grow older with their friends.

So lupin dying as an older new father is less sad?

No. Just out of curiosity. I may have my opinion, you have yours. This post was made to share each other’s opinions. That’s about it. Sorry if it confused or offended you somehow

Seems you are offended. You saying “it blows your mind” suggest stronger feelings above just “curiosity “

Same goes for Snape

Ben Barnes. I know he's super popular in fancasts already, but he would be good for their age range. However, I adore Gary Oldman. He may have been a bit older, but I think it worked well seeing as he spent a decade in Azkaban.

Stressful situations can age you quicker. I... I think Azkaban counts as stressful. 😅

Plus all of Sirius’ contemporaries were also cast older. Snape, Lupin, Sirius, Pettigrew etc. should have all been like 34 in PoA.

plus Ben Barnes is a fan of Harry Potter and he is well aware of « him being «  Sirius Black and he seems fine with that 🤣

I find the idea of Eoin Macken very intriguing. Of course Sirius in my head is pretty tall but the looks and the attitude is so so on point!

Just googled him, I've not heard of him. You're right. He is SPOT-ON!

Okay so basically I have seen him in the BBC 'Merlin'. He plays Gwaine and the moment his character is introduced, I went 'Sirius!

Had to Google him. Damn he is handsome

Yup! Very!

Gwaine :D

Ah finally someone who knows! :)

He definitely has the attitude! I love myself some Gwaine 😍

Geez, without realizing I was thinking of him when I think of Sirius

Right!? I had this image built in my head and then I watched him in one of his works and then I just went 'Sirius. He's real lol'!

haven't seen any of his movies, but googled him, and I was like 'Sirius' he's who I've been imaging Sirius as without knowing it.

no one, i loved Gary Oldman as Sirius

Not Sirius, but Rob James-Collier in the role of Thomas Barrow on Downton Abbey is 100000% what I picture adult Tom Riddle to look like

u/putyourcheeksinabeek avatar

Hot take: I think Daniel Radcliffe would be perfect in that role now.

Wes Bentley would be perfect.

disagree, but either way he’s american and wouldn’t be cast anyways lol

Everything can be different in the future.

future? this would be the past lol

There are no movie remakes in the world. lol (ten times)

Personally I think Oldman nailed it.

That being said, if his role was cast today, I'd go with Aidan Gillen. He'd bring enough gravitas and the necessary mischievousness to the role, to make it his own.

u/Wishart2016 avatar

I can only see him as Littlefinger.

Way too old and not handsome enough imo

Oh my god, that's brilliant. 😳

Predictable but Ben Barnes is a good fit imo. Back in the day, Colin Farrell maybe?

Ben Barnes yes 👏🏻 I didn’t even think of him at first. That would be a perfect cast

Kit Harington

Robert Sheehan could probably pull off Sirius pretty well tbh

I looked up some of these guys people are naming and any of them would look the part. It is something that Sirius, Snape, Lupin etc would only have been around 33 in poa (Snape would only be 31 in ss). So i can see why they would've wanted older actors to play the roles.

My issue with the movies is that the marauders are all just way too old. Sirius should only be like 40 years old. It's too late now but Tom Hiddleston is more like how I imagine Sirius Black.

Christian Bale

They should all have been younger! The youth of the older generation is part of the deeper meaning of the story. That and no proper robes apart from a couple of characters is an eternal bugbear to me. I hope the remakes have age accurate players. I am the same age as Lily etc and lots of people who write fanfics also get the 70s wrong and now the younger writers can’t get the 90s !

Um no one

I was just about to comment I always imagined him to be like Damon Salvatore

They do have a similar vibe

Ewan McGregor?

I dunno. I think The casting was pretty much perfect, but McGregor is pretty awesome so

u/JesusisLord55 avatar

I actually remember hearing a rumor or speculation ( sometime c. 2003) that Ewan McGregor was going to play Lupin. Ill have to search that up to see where i could find it, but he would've been great

In my mind’s eye, Sirius always looked like Bluto/Brutus, Popeye’s nemesis.

In my mind’s eye whilst reading for the first time as a teenager, to me he resembled Murdoc Niccals from Gorillaz - but a more human version lol

I honestly think Mads Mikkelsen would do great.

While Gary Oldman did a stellar job, I always figured Sirius would look like Micheal Sheen/ Lucien from Underworld- lots of grim and hair, slightly sickly/skinny and a bit younger looking than Oldman.

Whoever it was they would have to be capable of playing Sirius as both a good guy and an arsehole, cause that's what he was! I get the impression people like Sirius because of the badboy side.

It's interesting how Jo had all the Marauders acting like dicks at one time or other. With Lupin it took till Deathly Hallows, where suddenly she's using him as some sort of figure that could abandon his wife and child and we were supposed to believe that... The argument with Harry was so out of place. Out of all of them, Sirius would have been the one to go recklessly on the adventure with Harry.

I didn’t look through all the comments to see if anyone already said it… but definitely Ben Barnes 😍🧡🧡🧡

A lot of ppl mentioned him :)

Haha yeah I saw that after I spent a little time looking haha I just got excited and commented right away 😜😜
