Biography: Robert Jenkinson, Earl of Liverpool became British Prime Minister at 42 after the assassination of Spencer Perceval in 1812. He saw the country through a period of unrest at both at home and through the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.

Unrest at home stemmed from an economic recession and the creation of the Corn Laws led to the suspension of habeas corpus for 2 years. In 1819 the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, prompted the Earl of Liverpool's ‘Six Acts’, designed to restrict meetings that would encourage radicalism.

In 1820 the Earl of Liverpool and other government ministers survived the Cato Street Conspiracy, an attempt by radicals to murder them at a dinner.

From 1820 the Earl of Liverpool's policies became more liberal and economic prosperity returned. He resigned in 1827 after a stroke and he died the next year.
