Humphrey Ker hits back at 'absurd' criticism of Wrexham spending under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds - The Wrexham Insider

Wrexham have been on an incredible journey over the last few years, capturing hearts and minds across the world in the process.

Nobody could have predicted a Hollywood takeover at Wrexham but here we are.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have revolutionised the club and the back-to-back promotions are a fine reward for their influence.

Wrexham have gone from National League to League One in rapid fashion and Reynolds is even looking to go one step further and win promotion to the Championship.

That would be a little bold but Reynolds has indicated that he is ready to go ‘go for broke’ in pursuit of another promotion.

That indicates more spending with Wrexham no doubt ready to make some big signings during the summer transfer window.

Wrexham have managed to sign players from higher divisions throughout the McElhenney and Reynolds era – and that may well continue this summer.

Humphrey Ker on Wrexham spending

Wrexham have picked up plenty of international supporters thanks to the success of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Not everybody is on board with the Wrexham project though and rival supporters are praying for the club’s downfall.

Any club who spends more than the league average is going to receive that kind of sentiment; even more so when the owners involved are Hollywood celebrities.

That is just the nature of football fans and many have fired jabs at Wrexham for outspending National League and League Two rivals to win promotion.

Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker has now responded to that criticism whilst speaking to The Independent.

Ker suggests that Wrexham are now actually back to being underdogs in League One despite the support behind the club.

Ker believes that other fans are ‘jealous’ of the Wrexham project and completely refutes the idea of Wrexham ‘destroying football’.

The comedian-turned-director called those accusations ‘absurd’, adding that he doesn’t ever want Wrexham to be a negative on the game.

“By getting promoted, we are back into a degree of underdoggery,” said Ker. “But I really did think, as we went into the season, to call us underdogs was a bit disingenuous. We’ve transitioned out of that phrase.”

“People have been turning out in droves to support us, but also to boo us and try and beat us. There was a big target on our heads – lots of people have been very nice and calm about it, but lots of people take umbrage, effectively jealous of what’s going on. So they accuse us of destroying football – which I think is absurd. I’m actually quite sensitive to the idea of that, I don’t want us ever to become a force that’s bad for football,” he added.

Wrexham will meet naysayers no matter what

McElhenney and Reynolds have shown a commitment not just to Wrexham as a club but also as a city.

That is what football fans want from owners but the celebrity profile, rapid rise and considerable investment leave Wrexham open to criticism.

McElhenney and Reynolds certainly won’t care and neither will the majority of Wrexham fans.

This fanbase has suffered enough pain over the years; why not enjoy this exciting period while it lasts?

There is surely more excitement to come as Wrexham embark on a transfer window as a League One club.

That means more spending and probably more criticism, but Ker will clearly attempt to make sure that Wrexham do everything by the book moving forward – and his sensible approach is crucial to this operation.
