- Antonio_em_BrasíliaBrasilia, DF73 contributionsWe came for wine-tasting at sunset. Our hostess, Milene, was waiting for us at the gate of the winery, a half an hour drive from Rivera, a town on the border with Brazil. Actually, the dirt road conducive to the property is actually on the borderline, lined with landmarks with Brazil/Uruguay showing on opposite faces. At the beginning, we were shown a very modern facility dug on the rock four floors down where the wine is produced and stored (21,000 liters steel tanks and American and French oak barrels on the floor below). We were then invited by our very knowledgeable hostess to walk to the vineyards to see by ourselves some of the varieties cultivated at this very appropriate terroir (mostly sand and rocks with good insulation and soft slopes). After a while amongst manicured vineyards, we were guided to an observation tower across the border at the Brazilian side, overlooking the landscape, from were we could spot some of the flat hills (“cerros”) typical of the topography of this region. There we could watch a wonderful sunset while trying some the wines designed by Francisco Carrau, the winemaker who represents a family in the business of producing wine since 1762 (originally in Catalunya, Spain), paired with locally produced olive oil, cheese and charcuterie. All in all, a very pleasant and illustrative experience, made outstanding by our exceptional guide/hostess who spared no effort to showcase the excellent wines produced by Cerro Chapeu.Written December 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
