There’s a long history of sasquatches in cinematic history. Harry from Harry and the Hendersons. Susan in Missing Link. Uh … Chewbacca? (Just kidding, Star Wars fans, please don’t yell at me.)
OK, so “long” history might be overstating it. But there is a tradition, nonetheless, and it continued with the recent release of Sasquatch Sunset. The film technically stars Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg, although you wouldn’t know it considering everyone’s buried under pounds of fur and sasquatch prosthetics and … other things.
Right up front, you should know there are many parts of this movie that are pretty gross. The idea is that it’s a year in the life of a sasquatch family, which means you get the good and the bad and the disgusting. You also get no words. Grunts? Squeaks? Other guttural sounds? Absolutely. But this truly is a “fly on the wall” situation, with no narration or explanation.
The question is: Do you want to be that fly? It’s not easy to answer for a film that’s so wild (literally and figuratively) and all over the place — from highbrow to the lowest of the lowbrow.
