rob w I could not get past 15 minutes to see it was a poor movie with poor directing. I know nothing of direction and could have done a better job. I decided to go back to the movie to see if it got better. IT DID NOT. I am watching and thinking the writing is horrible. I looked up to see who wrote it, not surprised it was Helen Hunt. I am an artist and I should switch, I can write bad movies and direct them and get the backer to pay me. I should have looked to see who edited it, probably Helen Hunt. There were shots that did not make sense. So good Helen has her looks to fall back on. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Sean S This movie further proves what a great actor Hunt is, but the directing aspect of the movie was not her strength. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review Sunshine W Helen Hunt seemed wooden and overall the movie was boring. I managed to finish it but it wasn't very good at all. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/01/23 Full Review fargo n Helen Hunt proves how lame she is by stepping out of The stereotype of a bickering Jewish mother, and ironically a literary Mastermind who writes a stereotypical movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jean h Surfers love this movie. Did you know that? I'd like to say, "Oooh this is what is was like when I was learning to surf." But, I can't. I can't remember learning to surf, that's how young I was when I learned how. Thank you, Dad. BUT, as a former PSIA certified ski instructor, I have often come across the arrogant untaught beginner who thinks they can "intuit" a sport that has taken most of us years to perfect. Many, many things in this movie are exquisitely correct, kind of like the main character. The way she tucks the packet under her breasts as she paddles out to....not spoiling it. I cried, though. And, the relationship between "Jackie" and everyone else in the movie is exactly as it should be. Luke Wilson is a gem, as always. So are the supporting characters, and California itself behaves as it should. I thought the acting was better than good, I thought the scenes folded seamlessly into each other, and I thought the ocean should have gotten a good review as well. I'm landlocked right now, so I always appreciate a good ocean movie. This one has a couple marvelous glassy swells to look at. It's a little frustrating to some people to learn how to do something new. Some folks only want the end result, skip the struggle involved with learning. Is this why this movie was underrated? Or is it hard to know how to classify a movie that is both funny and deals with death AND with writers AND with both coasts? See, I'd call this a comedy. But others would call it a romantic comedy, while still other folks would say, nope, there's someone dead involved, it is a drama. Where's the category which combines all three...where's the category called "Reality, or "Life Stories." Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it!!!!!!!! FU haters. Randy Cordova Arizona Republic As a screenwriter, [Hunt] can be a bit obvious: It's the kind of film in which the son addresses his mother by her first name. Rated: 3/5 May 8, 2015 Full Review Nell Minow Movie Mom Clever and warm-hearted. Rated: B+ May 7, 2015 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com This is an unusual movie, especially when you look back and realize how usual it seemed going in. Rated: 3/4 May 1, 2015 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Not a complete wipe-out, but it feels more VOD than big screen. Rated: 3/5 Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said The film has a sun drenched, appealing California-ness and Hunt has that perpetually sunny bright look that helps soften her character's hard edges; the sun and light seem to erase the Manhattan publishing executive persona and she relaxes. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Susan G. Cole NOW Toronto The wonky narrative is definitely a problem - Hunt takes too long to get us to sympathize with the obsessed Jackie - but by then, we really want her to catch that wave.
