Hey, great make-up, the money's on the screen, but even if Burton hadn't been entirely checked out he's exactly the wrong guy to make a hifalutin fantasy epic about once-dominant power structures terrified that there might be no return to the status quo. He's actually just a bored little kid, so instead this is peppered with a lot of mugging and dipshit nostalgia and platitudes masquerading as commentary. The stupid ending is actually the only inspired part -- arbitrary or not at least it's amusingly weird. And Wahlberg wasn't even this bad in THE HAPPENING.

A waste of good character design and fantastic make-up, Planet of the Apes features garbage dialogue, clunky sets, an incredibly inconsistent tone and characters you couldn't possibly care about. If you have ever seen a pizza after the box has been dropped, that would be the food equivalent of this film. Ingredients everywhere, but an un-appetizing mess.
Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes isn't terrible, but it is a pretty bad film. The film has it's moments, but overall it's incredibly cheesy and has some really terrible dialogue.
The make-up, costuming, and set design are all top notch. Most of the people playing the apes are great, but boy are we really lacking on the human front with Wahlberg & Co. They must've done so many takes to get their scenes shot when the cardboard cutout of Estella Warren kept blowing over in the wind.
Burton was simply the wrong choice for this, no two ways about it. And the fact that they used this re-boot to essentially just have a story with the same exact beats as the '68 Apes was a mistake too.
One of the worst endings in film history.

I think this was the first remake that made the world go "oh, I guess repeating other properties is a bad idea" and we've hated remakes ever since.

Labelled as a remake of the 1968 original and it does have the same skeleton as the original but a lot has changed here to the point where I would call it a reinventing. For starters, all humans talk now which changes a lot of the story, but not for the better because now it doesn't really make sense why the apes treat humans like animals and believe they have no soul if they can talk and have a conversation—or I guess it does make sense considering human history.
