THE 10 BEST Richmond Sights & Historical Landmarks to Visit (2024)
This was a beautiful garden / park. We wanted a day of getting "out of the city" and a local had recommended this place. It is massive and very easy to walk the entire garden. Not all places are ADA compliant as some paths had lots of stairs or stepping stones on the water.
Huge cemetery! I visited to find the graves of James Monroe, John Tyler and Jefferson Davis. The latter of which I found thanks to an extremely helpful Cemetery employee. This is one of three places that has multiple presidents buried there-along with Arlington National Cemetery (Taft & Kennedy) and United First Parish Church (John and John Quincy Adams).
For being just a state capitol building, it definitely was much more imposing than I imagined - both from an exterior and interior point of view. Worth a walk through just to take a peek.
A one-mile strip of shops and cafes and restaurants SO reminiscent of Berkeley CA. A man playing a digereedoo on the street. Diverse and happy crowd strolling along. Deserved more time than we gave it.
I visited St. John’s Episcopal Church in October 2023. I went first to the Visitor Center. For $5, I was able to go inside the church. A Docent pointed out where Patrick Henry stood to give his famous “Give me Liberty or give me Death” speech in 1775. The Docent also explained the history of the church. It was a very worthwhile place to visit.
Small museum, but full of very interesting artifacts, not only about Poe but time period as well. Has a very 'Poe' feeling even if he didn't actually live in the house. It is worth a stop in Richmond for any one interested in Edgar Allan Poe.
As an Eautopean, I did not know much about the Civil War, and this museum is showing it in an easy and interesting way. Enjoyed main exhibit more than top floor, where they present story about money in USA - this part was in my opinion bit too chaotic and could've been done better. The cost for the entry is pretty big considering the size of the place but I defined reccomend visiting
I visited the Virginia War Memorial in October 2023. The indoor exhibits were interesting including each war and Virginia’s role in it. Outdoors was an eternal flame and a corridor with the name of each person from Virginia who died in a war. There was also the name of each major battle fought by the U.S. The view from the Virginia War Memorial was spectacular.
Find the Pipeline Walkway on the James river near the Canal Walk. Parking is at the end of S. 12th street. A real adventure on a catwalk that goes atop a water pipeline over the rapids and the river. Across from the American Civil War Museum is the Belle Isle Suspension Pedestrian Bridge. Also very cool to walk over. about 1/2 mile each way, right under a real bridge, so always shaded. Ends up on Belle Isle where you can walk a path along the river and see the huge rocks and rapids. The regular Canal Walk is nice too.
We thoroughly enjoyed this visit and tour. We had a wonderful, knowledgeable guide. She answered all our questions and added thought provoking content to the tour. They have done an incredible job of maintaining this home with accuracy. We are so impressed with this place. This is a super worthwhile activity that can be done without spending a penny! There is free parking on 2nd street too! Make sure you watch the offered short film so you have context for the home tour.
This is a beautiful house and the tour provides insight into both the architecture and history of the building and into one of America's most important Supreme Court justices. Our tour guide was excellent, and the building itself and its history were fascinating. Recommended visit.
We were walking with no plan and came across the Memorial Bridget - this was a wonderful surprise for our walk. It was really cool to see the cargo trains go by, or stand in the middle and watch the water flow passed. Walking all the way across is worth it - the other side has spots to rest and overlooks. My 6yr was able to walk the entire thing and back, with several rests and snack breaks LOL but it is worth it.
We drove to Richmond to see Hamilton at this theater. Georhe Washington stole the show! Some pwrformers were stronger (better) than others. It's a beautofil old theater with an interesting history (we googled while we waited). Because of its age, the seats are tight (knees may reach the seat in front of you). The staff before the show and at half-time were so friendly! We enjoyed being in this gem of a theater.
We really enjoyed walking through this area of town, with it's beautiful and diverse architectural styles. Took many pictures of the cool wall art as well.
