American actor Richard Cromwell, sometimes known as Roy Radabaugh, was born LeRoy Melvin Radabaugh on January 8, 1910. He passed away on October 11, 1960.
With his roles in Jezebel (1938) with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda and again in John Ford’s Young Mr. Lincoln, his career was at its height (1939).
Cromwell co-starred with Gary Cooper and Franchot Tone in The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935), which is perhaps where his fame was initially cemented.
That movie was Henry Hathaway’s first significant work as a director, and it was based on the well-known Francis Yeats-Brown book.
The Lives of a Bengal Lancer received a Best Picture nomination from Paramount Studios in 1935, but Mutiny on the Bounty won the Oscar for Best Picture that year.
Cromwell’s ongoing popularity was summed up by Leslie Halliwell in The Filmgoer’s Companion when he called him “a leading man, [the] gentle hero of early sound films.”
