Sharing the hill with the cathedral and the historical museum, the Neue Residenz is flat-out opulent Baroque. Most famous for its banquet hall incorporating portraits of all 12 Roman emperors, it features room after room of ceilings elaborately plastered and brightly painted. Why choose one form of display when you can have both? Princely families occupied this palace until the early 20th Century. In what were the private apartments, the last generation of occupants replaced some of the ostentation with elegant Biedermeier touches, including a delicately inlaid cradle. The adjacent rose garden provides fine views of the city.

It's a nice palace, but there's not that much to see. The guided tour is in German, so if you're not from Germany you miss out most of the things. There are books in other languages but they contain little information. It's definitely worth a visit if you happen to be around Bamberg, but it's not that special. The rose garden is lovely, but small.

This is one of the more opulent clerical residences to be found anywhere. It was built at a time where the bishop filled both a clerical and temporal role as ruler of Bamberg, and was known as a Prince-Bishop. The artwork, the guilded halls and rooms, and the sheer size of the place display the power and wealth once held by these Prince-Bishops.

We were told by the staff at the desk that we could go on a tour to see more of the palace, but it would be in German. They didn't say that it was pretty much a waste of time if you didn't go on a tour. We were only able to see some old paintings and one room,. The room was very ornate and pretty, but not worth the 6 euro it cost to get in. I feel the staff should have explained what you would see with/without the tour.

We hadread the reviews so we were expecting the visit to be a problem but boy oh boy it was bad !! The bad attitude starts from the moment you get your ticket and ask where to start and we were grunted at .There is no English guide only cards in English in the rooms .The guide could speak good English but choose not to !,, On the tour there were 5 Brits and 2 Germans and the guide concentrated his attention on the 2 Ladies! !! It would have been possible to give us a few hints about the palace but he preferred to laugh and joke with the Ladies. The palace is not that good anyway compared to the msny other ones we visited in Germany so what he found to joke about we never found out ! All in all a waste of an hour and we left the tour before the end . The Rose garden is worth a visit for the views and is free.

I don't write many reviews on attractions but I felt compelled to write this one after the unfortunate time we spent with the extremely haughty and rude young woman who was our docent. We understood that this tour was in German and that at the entry to each room, sheets written in other languages, including English, would be available. The gentleman who sold us our tickets kindly said that guides would be happy to answer questions in English. Early in the tour, a non-German speaking woman asked a question in English and the guide snapped back "you have a card and you can follow along." Note: the card described the room in just two sentences. The same guide very unkindly yelled at another family with children for making too much noise. At one point, my husband asked if guests were allowed to take photos, to which she berated him for not having heard her announce at the start of the tour that photos were verboten. And the really unforgivable act was when she and a German-speaking guest rolled their eyes and mocked my husband for asking that straightforward and reasonable question. I understand that these docents have a difficult job when they have to deal with people of different cultures, and I also know that phrases often don't come out as intended when one isn't speaking in his or her native language. But this young woman was arrogant and too impatient to be a docent. The rooms were lovely and we enjoyed seeing them. I would just caution that if you don't speak German, you should have low expectations regarding the actual tour. Fingers crossed that you don't end up with her!

This is so much better from the outside. The building is imposing and the Rose Garden at the side is really beautiful. There is a lovely cafe there as well where I enjoyed a lovely iced coffee.
Now to the Residenz............I love walking around palaces and homes and was looking forward to visiting this very much although it is a bit of a hike up the hill to reach Domplatz.
Inside the staff are very nice and polite. We had to wait for a larger group to form as you can only walk around the rooms with a guide ( the guide does the tour in German only!!!). There are however English reading materials, but these do not give you a lot of information or historical content.
We were only allowed in a few of the rooms. They were not very well maintained, very sparsely furnished - most of the furnishings not original, and quite dark and smelly. The highlight was probably the commode chair in the bedroom (which sort of gives an indication of just how 'crappy' this visit was). I am so sorry to say that I would not recommend this at all.

Entry fee is only 4.50 euro and includes a 90 minute tour. The tour runs every 15 minutes and is only in German. As you enter each wing of the Residenz you can collect and guide in English so you can read along as the tour moves from room to room. Our tour guide spoke English and could answer any questions we had. Photos are allowed inside as long as no flash is used.

If you don't speak German, then do not go for the tour. After having a discussion (in fluent english) with very arrogant german lady, that the tour is only in German, we decided to invest 4 EUR/person and we did go for it. For non-German speaking visitors they have a paper guides for each floor. Unfortunately the guide was sometimes speaking obviously about something interesting, whilst the paper guide described the room in 2 sentences. Besides the language barrier, there is also the fact that the place is not nice. It is very dusty and not renovated. The only nice thing in the tour is the Emperor's room, which we didn't enjoy either, because it is at the very end of the tour, where we were already bored by the whole concept.

If they tell you the tour is in English, do not believe them as they hand you a very short information sheet and that consists of their English tour. It is 4,50 euro for a 45 minute tour and the rooms are beautiful. Short - just a few rooms, but still worth it IF they told the truth that it wouldn’t be understandable as they said it would be.

Hi,
** Is it enough 1 hour and 30 minutes in total to see the palace inside and the garden (although it is winter)?
** Are there lockers where you can leave your backpack and warm clothes?

Yes, they have lockers for a refundable 2€ deposit. I would suggest allocating more time if possible, but it depends on how thorough you want your visit to be. Since it is winter, there won’t be as much to see and enjoy in the garden.

Why can you not supply the same amount of information, in other languages, to all visitors, you only cater for German native speakers, I know enough to get by in the language but the dialect Spoken was too difficult, I was told on paying at front desk it's no problem as other language guides are available, these are not guides, one told you dimensions of a room? Why would we want to know bedroom is 90sq m?
The guide is informing on many things, she is so rushed through the many rooms she cannot take time for anyone.
You take money from tourists to the town but you are not catering for them, if you continue to do this negative reviews will be posted and no visitors will come, is this the way forward?
What do you do when people come from Viking river cruises? Or do they not?

I agree with your comments. For a international orientated place as Bamberg (as in tourists from all places) I also found the information in other languages not sufficient. That should be no problem, but the information about this could be better. I also heard at the front desk all the information would be available in English, but this unfortunately was not true.
However, this information should be shared with the Neue Residenz and not here I guess. I already mailed them last week about this.
