Product Description

Based on the true story of Crips street gang founder Stan "Tookie" Williams.

Amazon.com

In the annals of acting, 2004 will be remembered as a banner year for Jamie Foxx. Before his acclaimed turns in Collateral, alongside Tom Cruise, and Ray, the Ray Charles biopic, he produced and starred in this made-for-cable movie about former gangbanger Stan "Tookie" Williams. Directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Vondie Curtis Hall (Gridlock'd), Redemption tracks Tookie's rise as co-founder of L.A.Â’s notorious Crips, fall to death-row inmate, and rise again to Nobel Prize Nominee. TookieÂ’s reminiscences to journalist Barbara Becnel (Lynn Whitfield), while he is on death row, frame the story. Virtually unrecognizable from his days on In Living Color, a buffed-up, dreadlocked Foxx gives an effectively low-key performance, while Whitfield also shines in a less rewarding role. Redemption may not have the grandeur of Malcolm X or The Hurricane--and Tookie's transformation from man of violence to man of peace happens too quickly--but his story is just as inspirational. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This is a fantastic "docu-drama" which captures the essence of the life of Stan "Tookie" Williams, executed by the State of California on December 22, 2005. Williams co-founded the notoriously violent Crips street gang in Los Angeles before eventually being sent to death row over the murders of four people in 1979 (a charge he always denied).

The film, starring Jamie Foxx as Williams, focuses on Tookie's death row experience where he begins to take stock of his negative achievements in life. From there, Tookie embarks on an ambitious project of writing children's books aimed at steering youth clear of gangs. By banking on his street credentials as the world's toughest gangster he catches the attention of youth in a way that parents, teachers and police officers cannot and even brings Crips and Bloods together at peace rallies.

This is a well-acted drama that closely follows real-life events in its study of Tookie's transformation. The film also raises serious questions about Tookie's subsequent execution despite his valiant efforts to right his earlier wrongs, his claim to innocence and his multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. If California would execute this man despite his activism (or because of it...), then who can ever claim to have truly achieved redemption?

I will admit that this is not much as far as a film-quality production, but I GUARANTEE you it is WELL worth your time to watch one of the most amazing stories about a remarkable man that made the most unlikely, 180-degree positive turnarounds in his life that you will have ever heard about in all of history. I know a decent amount of historical facts, but never have I learned about a person that went from one incredible extreme of malicious intent, to a truly benevolent, beautiful human being. Extraordinary.

I use the book in my Adapted English classroom. After we read the book, I show the movie. It's a nice follow up to the book and opens up discussion about how gangs can influence our lives. I teach in an inter-city school so gangs are a relevant topic to discuss.

To see how God loves people so much as to take a man so far off & turn him around & spread peace

Dispite that he paid for his life of his consiquences, brbut he redeemed himself and help the next man to not followed in his footsteps....I kind of expected more but I realised that this movie was aired before his death. It was a very heart felt movie any anyone should watch this movie to get the feel of what it's like to waste one's life gang banging and had to pay for his hard distructional work living life on death row.

Stanly, we really wasted his life on joining a gang life that wasn't about nothing but distruction. He could had left negative associates alone, which included his dead-beat father who abandoned him (which it caused him to find so-call love in the mean streets). I have learned alot by watching this movie.

Excellent movie showing the hardship of people and how they can affect an entire community and country. Problems within inner city life must be addressed or more individuals will end up in gangs and prison life. There is hope for those who find "redemption" as Stan "Tookie" Williams. Very thought provoking movie! Job well done!

If solely judged on Tookie Williams during his prison years, Redemption is a cracker-jack piece of film. It drives from the heart a sincerity that here was a man, that basically unleashed gangland hell on America, who desperately craved redemption from his prison cell. He strives to do good, to help communities by way of education in book and oration form, but is the film heavily biased towards the redemptive angle? Is the monster side of Williams soft soaped? Sadly yes it is.

We don't need to see continual violence thrust in our faces to know Williams was a very bad egg, but although we see staged flashbacks that break the heart and frighten us, director Vondie Curtis-Hall and writer J.T. Allen are fully committed to garnering empathy for the man. Of course on the flip-side of that, if they showed an abundance of violence perpetrated by Williams, then accusations of glorifying would surely have followed. Yet there has to be a balance, a balance that some film makers do find, but it isn't found here.

Is it a story worth telling? Yes it is, of course, and with a superb and controlled performance by Jamie Foxx in the title role driving it forwards, it remains riveting throughout. However, when the dust settles and the end credits roll, what of the victims families blighted by Williams crimes? How must they have felt seeing Williams having a film made about him? A double edged sword movie for sure, artistically above average? Yes. Morally? Questionable. 6/10

A brilliant Movie played perfectly by Jamie Foxx, but its preaching along with its feeling that We should feel sorry for this Man (Who obviously is sorry for the things He's done) does pulls away from the dispicable things Tookie did to put Himself where he is in the First place.
