Although James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating their own DC Universe, parts of the fandom are still holding out hope for the return of the "SnyderVerse," the term referring to the DC Extended Universe movies directed by Zack Snyder. While the SnyderVerse is unlikely to be revived anytime soon, Snyder recently shared that he'd be open to completing his unique vision for the DCEU in another medium.

While speaking with Empire (via Screen Rant), Snyder was asked if he'd be interested in finishing his Justice League trilogy in animation. "Yeah, absolutely," he stated. "That’d be fun. That’d be cool." Snyder's latest comment on continuing his storyline for the DCEU comes after he shared in December 2023 that he would "absolutely, no question," complete his vision if Netflix "owned the rights to the DC characters in my extended universe."

Zack Snyder Had a Five Movie Plan for the DCEU

Following the critical and commercial success of Man of Steel (2013), Warner Bros. brought Snyder back to direct Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) — the first live-action film to feature the DC Trinity onscreen together — and Justice League (2017). The latter was supposed to continue the story arcs Snyder established in Dawn of Justice; however, following the death of his daughter, Snyder stepped away from the DCEU, with Joss Whedon coming in to finish the superhero film. This resulted in the theatrical cut of Justice League, known within the fandom as Josstice League, ending up being lighter and more comedic than the previous DCEU entries.

Snyder originally had a five-film plan for the DCEU that would have concluded with Justice League 2 and Justice League 3. However, once Snyder departed the franchise, Warner Bros. and DC Films took the DCEU in a different direction, leading to the fandom being split into two distinct factions. Some enjoyed the lighter installments, like Shazam! and The Suicide Squad, while others wanted to see Snyder's vision restored. After a highly publicized online campaign calling on Warner Bros. to release the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League, Snyder was allowed to finish his vision for the 2017 film, which was released on HBO Max in 2021 as Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Rebel Moon Has Zack Snyder's Attention Right Now

Since stepping away from the DC sandbox, Snyder has launched two original franchises on Netflix: Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon. While the former was successful enough to receive a prequel (Army of Thieves) and a forthcoming animated series, the latter has truly evolved into a multimedia franchise. The first installment in the Rebel Moon series, Part One: A Child of Fire, was released on Netflix in December 2023, with Part Two: The Scargiver set to drop onto the streaming platform on April 19. A four-issue prequel comic, an animated series, and a video game have also been released or are in development.

Zack Snyder's Justice League is available to stream on Max.
