Product Description
Wes Craven (The People Under the Stairs, Shocker) directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo. A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses. Based on the true life experiences of Wade Davis and filmed on location in Haiti, it's a frightening excursion into black magic and the supernatural.

Bill Pullman, in his first starring role, goes to hell and back, putting himself through situations that big shot actors would likely avoid. His acting chops are on full display, making his character believable and relatable, without any forced feelings or nuances; a very natural, compelling performer! Keep an eye out for Michael Gough and some fantastic, claustrophobic (and terrifying) set pieces.
GREAT MOVIE, QUALITY ACTING AND BELIEVABLE STORY (Based on a true story: Recomend Reading the Book by professor Wade Davis too!)
6.5/10
Never a dull moment, nice cinematography, with some very effectively shot scenes. Zakes Mokae crawls under your skin as a convincing statist voodoo villain. Although Bill Pulman shows more range than in any other roll I've seen him depict, his lead characterization is still much too smugly skating on the surface. I think a deep crevice of emotion was required, and Pulman a poor casting choice. While all the characters were rather shallow and failing to inspire much empathy, the story narrative was fairly fascinating and aggressively nimble.
The crucial failure of the film was the cartoonish scattershot ending, out of step with the film's prior serious, realistic tone and cinematic visual effects. Was like Elm St' Dream Warriors breakdanced into The Exorcist. A more visceral and emotionally accessible lead, plus a more realistic stark ending would have solidified an otherwise solid effort.

The film stars Bill Pulman and Cathy Tyson. Bill Pulman plays the part of Dr. Dennis Alan, who having survived a frightening hallucinogenic trip (in more senses of the word) in the Amazon jungle, is approached by a Boston pharmaceutical company to consider going out to Haiti, and to gather evidence of what substances are being used by the locals that can seemingly bring back the dead to life! Along the way Dr. Alan experiences first hand what it is like to go on these drug fuelled trips and the nightmarish sense of reality that befalls him. Mixed in with this is the head of the local police that is shown to be a nasty piece of work played by Zakes Mokae, and in his spare time practices voodoo rituals and threats of "I can get in your head, wherever you are," which Dr. Alan understands only too well when he is back in Boston having a meal with his friends.
The Blue-ray release certainly enhances the colours of the film and if you want to be entertained and have a spare 90 minutes or so then, give this film a try.
