      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Arguably Martin Scorsese's and Robert De Niro's finest film, Raging Bull is often painful to watch, but it's a searing, powerful work about an unsympathetic hero.

Dhanu K Robert De Niro's intense portrayal of the self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta is iconic, and Joe Pesci who plays a strong supporting role, is equally fantastic. The film is a complex portrait of a man who is consumed by his own rage, jealousy and paranoia. Raging Bull doesn't shy away from showcasing brutality, and its flinching sincerity resonates with audiences seeking a raw and powerful cinematic experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Thomas P The more time I let this film sit with me, the more meaningfull it gets Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review John S Martin Scorsese is brilliant and De Niro is equally as great . This is the telling of the legendary fighter Jake Lamotta. This is not Rocky. You'll love the fighter not the man. As good as it gets. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Farah R Although Raging Bull is one of the most potent collaborations between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, it's difficult to watch and unenjoyable. The insane speed with which the actors speak makes it extremely hard to pick up their dialogue, and the tedious pace of events makes it impossible to stay engaged. The characters' gray morality and overuse of violence leave little room to root for any of them. While this film is considered a biopic, it seems more like a bleak recount of its protagonist's life. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Nasya R The film is full of toxic masculinity. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Scarface De Niro's best performance. This movie makes Rocky look like Mickey Mouse. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Dean Johnson Orlando Sentinel The brutality of Raging Bull is intense, a mood Scorsese maintains consistently. And, connected with that, is the director's search for, if not beauty, then poetry, within that vivid viciousness. He succeeds in that search. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 11, 2023 Full Review Joseph Gelmis Newsday De Niro playing La Motta in Raging Bull is beyond mere typecasting. It is an apotheosis. With La Motta as technical adviser, De Niro, an actor with a passion for authenticity, has found the ideal outlet for his singular talent. Rated: 3/4 Oct 11, 2023 Full Review Desmond Ryan Philadelphia Inquirer Even if Scorsese and De Niro have created a movie that defies categories, the sports film will never seem quite the same, and the boxing division has a new heavyweight against which past and future efforts will be measured. Oct 11, 2023 Full Review Mike Thorn Vague Visages Martin Scorsese perfects a configuration of the biopic as self-recognized fiction. Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Kenneth Turan New West/California An intensely personal piece of work made to exacting specifications by a team of perfectionists. The result is like the man it portrays -- undeniably powerful and distinctive but not especially pleasant, an inspirer of awe but not affection. Oct 11, 2023 Full Review Ginger Varney L.A. Weekly The impacted hell of city life, the incessant noise and motion, seen and heard as it washes over and around one man, is bearable only because Scorsese makes it beautiful. Almost overbearingly beautiful, but not quite. Oct 11, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
