There’s not another feeling quite like finding out a band you love is coming back from a long break. That feeling is increased when that band returns for one of the biggest music festivals of the year.

So when we first heard No Doubt was set to play the annual Coachella festival this year, we were understandably giddy. This was their first public live set since 2015, after all! And on top of that, Coachella sets always seem to raise the game year to year.

The set kicked off with the band rising from underneath the stage while drummer Adrian Young played the opening beats to their 2002 single “Hella Good.” As astute fans like X user @conorclancy noticed, this was the exact way they kicked off shows for their 2002 Rock Steady tour. Gwen Stefani even worked the same yellow plaid into her first outfit of the night that she’d worn for those past shows.

Yes, we said “first outfit of the night.” Did you really think we were getting Gwen Stefani in a set at Coachella without an outfit change?

The song choices for the night were heavy on their first two major label albums, with their mainstream breakout Tragic Kingdom dominating the show with 6 songs. This included their obvious hits like “Just A Girl” and “Don’t Speak” but also included “Happy Now?” and their first live performance of “Different People” since 2009.

Return of Saturn was represented by “Ex-Girlfriend,” “New,” “Simple Kind of Life” and “Bathwater,” which featured special guest Olivia Rodrigo. You can read all about that and some other great Coachella 2024 guest appearances here.

When No Doubt first posted a video hinting at reuniting, it involved Gwen showing off the art from the cover of the band’s 1995 album The Beacon Street Collection. So it’s fitting that they included “Total Hate ‘95” in their reunion show, bringing it back for the first time since 2012.

Even with their own extensive catalog, No Doubt chose two covers for the night. The first was obviously their radio hit cover of Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life,” which they recorded for their 2003 compilation The Singles 1992 - 2003. The other was a live debut of “One Step Beyond” by Jamaican artist Prince Buster.

Maybe the biggest surprise was that the group played almost nothing from their most recent album, 2012’s Push and Shove. There was a short instrumental nod to the title track, but otherwise everything they played was from before their first hiatus.

The evening of course closed with “Spiderwebs.” It’s tradition.

No Doubt is set to play weekend two of Coachella next weekend. After that, who knows? The band hasn’t indicated if they’re working on new music or planning a reunion tour, though we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out both The Beacon Street Collection and Tragic Kingdom turn 30 next year and that might be a cool time to see the group back on the road.
